I Couldn’t Even Paint My Nails

If you follow the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films chronologically, Scarlett Johansson first appears in 2010’s “Iron Man 2.” Later on, you’ll find her in “Black Widow” from 2021. For nearly a decade, she played a key role in the MCU before departing after “Endgame” and its subsequent film. Recently, she shared insights about the experience of being tied to the same franchise for such an extended period and the unique difficulties that came along with it.

During an interview with Interview Magazine, Johansson enquired about the fifth season of Stranger Things and whether David Harbour felt relieved that it was concluding this year. He expressed that after a decade, he felt like saying “Okay,” which followed his comment that working on the same project for a long time can make you feel like you’re playing the same tune repeatedly. Interestingly, Harbour mentioned that his Black Widow co-star also spent a decade in the MCU. In response, Johansson simply acknowledged this fact.

In some of the Marvel movies I’ve been in, my character had a greater impact than others. For instance, working with Chris Evans on Captain America: The Winter Soldier was particularly dynamic because we really connected well. However, in other films, the cast was so large and the storyline so complex that it seemed like my role was just to advance the plot. Spending five and a half months on such a demanding set can be restrictive; for example, I wouldn’t be able to get a haircut or even paint my nails.

It’s a fair observation to make. When you look at the movies Scarlett Johansson has been in, her characters tend to be diverse. She plays crucial roles in some of Marvel’s top films, such as Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Endgame, and she is the main character in Black Widow. However, there are movies like Iron Man 2 and even Avengers, where her contributions to the storyline are less substantial.

Regardless of the size of her role in the film, she must always give her all to the project and ensure her character’s appearance is spot-on. The actress from “Lost in Translation” may have considered this a trivial issue, but it can indeed significantly influence one’s life, as she pointed out.

As a devoted cinephile, I must confess that although these challenges might seem trivial to some, they carry significant weight for me, given the deep connection I’ve nurtured with my profession over the years. When the roles I play lack that spark of engagement, I find myself feeling a bit restless and confined at times.

Harbor found himself in agreement with his fellow actor’s feelings. Though he doesn’t color his fingernails, he could empathize with her perspective about not being able to alter one’s appearance, as when playing Hopper, he humorously pointed out that he “can’t even shave this freaking mustache.

It’s common for actors in long-lasting TV series to move on from their roles after several years. This could be due to numerous factors, but sometimes, they feel the need to explore new characters rather than sticking with one role repeatedly.

Switching up your appearance must bring a sense of liberation, not being tied down to one image for an extended period. This is particularly true if you’ve been portraying the same character for many years.

Currently, Scarlett Johansson enjoys the freedom to choose any project without worrying about fitting into a Marvel film narrative, as she’s now free from those commitments.

Currently, David Harbour is wrapping up his tenure on Stranger Things. However, his Marvel career is only beginning as he’s set to star in Black Widow and Thunderbolts, which will lead him to be part of the cast for Avengers: Doomsday.

In essence, these comments highlight the challenging nature of being part of a lengthy franchise like Marvel. On one hand, it offers significant advantages; on the other, it can lead to monotony and difficulty. Given this, I can understand why Scarlett Johansson hasn’t appeared in a Marvel movie since her departure in 2021.
