I Caught Up On HBO’s Task, And Unfortunately SNL’s Mare Of Easttown Sketch Has Ruined The Accents

As a big fan of HBO, I was really hooked by *Mare of Easttown* – the mystery was fantastic and the acting was top-notch. So, I was excited when I heard Brad Ingelsby, the creator, had a new miniseries called *Task* on HBO Max. I’m a few episodes in, and it’s good, but honestly, the characters’ accents keep reminding me of that hilarious *Saturday Night Live* sketch about *Mare of Easttown*. It’s hard *not* to think about it!

Everyone’s really enjoying ‘Task,’ and director Ingelsby has once again created a captivating story with a talented cast-who all convincingly use a Pennsylvania accent. While the actors are doing a great job with the dialect, I can’t help but compare it to the ‘Mare of Easttown’ sketch from ‘SNL.’ As a result, watching the new series has been unintentionally funny at times.

I Keep Laughing At Task’s Accents Thanks To SNL

If you have a Peacock subscription, you can revisit the SNL episode that parodied Mare of Easttown, originally broadcast in 2021. The sketch, cleverly titled “Murdur Durdur,” playfully imitates the Pennsylvania accent used by Kate Winslet and the rest of the Mare of Easttown cast. It was a really accurate impression, so when Task came out a few weeks ago, it took me some time to watch without being reminded of that Saturday Night Live sketch and its distinctive accent.

You can watch the sketch again below. Unlike a live performance, it’s a pre-recorded digital short, intentionally styled to resemble the show *Mare of Easttown*. However, things take a turn when Wawa hoagies unexpectedly appear at the crime scene.

While *Task* has a different storyline and style than Ingelsby’s other HBO show, it still feels connected. Viewers are buzzing about the possibility of a crossover with *Mare*, and many are just happy to have another high-quality limited series to watch. But is anyone else finding the accents in *Task* a little strange, especially after hearing them parodied on *Saturday Night Live*?

I might be especially prone to remembering things due to the amount of pop culture I consume for my work at TopMob. However, it’s also a testament to how funny and lasting *Saturday Night Live*’s parody of *Mare of Easttown* really was – I still find myself quoting it years later! I’m hoping *SNL* will create a similar sketch based on *Task* once the current season ends.

You can catch new episodes of *Task* on Sundays on HBO and streaming on HBO Max as part of the 2025 lineup. It remains to be seen if it will be as popular as *Mare of Easttown*, or if the creator, Brad Ingelsby, will connect his shows in a crossover event. In the meantime, I’m looking forward to watching and working on my Pennsylvania accent!
