I Asked Man Of Steel’s Writer What He Thought Of James Gunn’s Superman, And His The Dark Knight Analogy Made Perfect Sense
Approximately twelve years ago, David S. Goyer, who previously wrote “Blade” and “Batman Begins,” penned the Superman film “Man of Steel,” which launched the DC Extended Universe. More recently, in the same month, the DC Universe franchise’s movie side began with a Superman story as well, written and directed by James Gunn, known for “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “The Suicide Squad.” Goyer was one of many who went to see this upcoming film, and when expressing his thoughts on it, he drew an interesting comparison to “The Dark Knight.
Recently, I had an engaging conversation with David S. Goyer about the Netflix-exclusive TV series adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s comic book series, “The Sandman,” which he co-created with Gaiman and Allan Heinberg. Following our discussion on the second half of the show’s final season, set to release this Thursday (with a bonus episode coming on July 31), I couldn’t help but inquire about his thoughts on James Gunn’s “Superman” project. Upon my query, he expressed his views initially.
I truly appreciated it. People often presume that since I starred in The Dark Knight, I wouldn’t take a liking to The Batman, but I genuinely found it enjoyable. Every generation seems to get the Superman they require. It reminded me of a pendulum with Man of Steel – clearly, that was a much grittier, realistic portrayal, and we’re in an entirely different era now. What I adore about it is the tagline: ‘Kindness is punk rock.’ [This version aims to maintain the original sentiment while making it more conversational and easy to understand.]
In connection with his role in penning the script for the 20-year-old film “Batman Begins,” Goyer played a significant part in shaping Christopher Nolan’s Batman series by contributing to the stories of “The Dark Knight” and “The Dark Knight Rises.” However, this doesn’t imply that he will necessarily disapprove of future adaptations of characters he has previously worked on. In fact, Goyer admired Matt Reeves’ interpretation of Batman in “The Batman,” and also appreciated James Gunn’s work on the Superman project. Moreover, Goyer expressed his willingness to assist with Marvel Studios’ reboot of Blade, given its multiple challenges.

In David S. Goyer’s opinion, Superman is noticeably less grim and realistic compared to Man of Steel, which he found to be a positive aspect. He went on to discuss other elements of the film that appealed to him.
I find David Corenswet extremely captivating, a quality I wasn’t expecting when I first saw Krypto. But Krypto turned out to be charming, and I must say, the standout performance for me was Mr. Terrific. Together with Geoff Johns, we developed him into a genuine character within the Justice Society. So, I was overjoyed and thought Mr. Terrific was fantastic. Metamorpho also impressed me. It’s a joy to see a live-action version of Metamorpho, and it’s refreshing that James Gunn can showcase these unique, lesser-known DC characters. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I was rooting for its success, so I’m glad it’s been well-received.
After Michael Holt’s introduction as Mr. Terrific in issue #54 of Spectre in 1997, Goyer collaborated on the JSA comic book for its initial 51 issues. A significant portion of this period was spent working alongside Geoff Johns, during which Michael’s character evolved and became more developed. It’s gratifying to learn that Goyer appreciated Edi Gathegi’s portrayal of the character, as well as Superman himself, Krypto, Metamorpho, and all the elements James Gunn incorporated into his version of the Man of Steel’s mythology.
Every time “The Brave and the Bold,” that DCU’s Batman movie comes out, I’m eager to find out what David S. Goyer thought about it. Back then, he was set to co-write a “Green Lantern Corps” film, though that didn’t pan out. However, “Lanterns” is slated for premiere on HBO next year. Besides The Sandman, Goyer’s current TV projects include “Murderbot” and “Foundation,” both of which can be streamed with an Apple TV+ subscription.
