Just when it seemed like Hytale would never be finished, development unexpectedly started up again after a recent announcement from one of the game’s creators.
I’m so excited to share that Hytale is coming back! The team, including co-founder Simon Collins-Laflamme, has confirmed they’ve gotten the game back from Riot Games and are starting development up again. It’s amazing news after it was cancelled – I really thought we’d never see it!
So, I saw a post on the Hytale blog from Simon, and basically, Riot decided it just wasn’t the right fit for them to keep working on Hytale as it was. They felt the best thing to do, especially for us fans who’ve been waiting seven years for this game, was to give the project back to the people who originally started it. It’s a tough situation, but hopefully, the original creators can get it back on track!
Following extensive discussions and offers, Simon and his team successfully revived Hytale with Riot’s agreement. Simon announced they’ve brought back at least 30 developers who previously worked on the game, and have secured funding to continue Hytale’s development for the next decade.
What’s next for Hytale?
Simon emphasized that their main focus for Hytale is releasing a playable version of the game quickly, even if it’s not fully polished or perfect yet.

The Hytale team will reveal the release date for early access and how much the game will cost in just a few days. It will first be available on Windows, but they also plan to release it for Linux and Mac. They’re also working on bringing the game to even more platforms, and will share more information about that later.
Hytale will launch with features for exploring worlds, building creations, and even customizing the game with mods. However, minigames and a dedicated adventure mode won’t be available at first.
Simon cautioned players that the early access version of the game will likely have bugs, imbalances, and other problems. However, he’s confident that as more people start playing and share their feedback, the community will help improve the game and fix these issues.
Hytale’s full circle: From Hypixel to Riot and back to its original creators

Hytale is a creative sandbox game developed by the team behind Hypixel, a well-known Minecraft server. Its initial trailer, released in December 2018, has become incredibly popular, reaching over 61 million views as of 2025.
Hytale initially impressed Riot Games, resulting in financial backing and eventual purchase in 2020. Despite some updates from Riot over time, fans became impatient waiting for a playable version of the game. Unexpectedly, Riot announced in 2024 that development on Hytale would end in June 2025 due to ongoing difficulties.
In mid-August, Simon made a bold attempt to rescue Hytale by offering to buy the game from Riot Games. Talks continued for over a month, and in November, Simon and his team happily announced that they had reached an agreement with Riot, giving them complete control of Hytale.
Recent news about Hytale has fans excited again, especially with the possibility of playing the game soon through early access and the anticipation of future improvements.
