According to his previous publicist, Huw Edwards has received many offers from media outlets interested in hearing his account of events after being accused of possessing child pornography.
This newspaper recently reported that he brought on experienced publicist Barry Tomes for a week, offering services free of charge, to assist in reviving his career.
Tomes recently shared with the Daily Mail that he’s been getting requests for photoshoots and interviews, and has also received offers to appear on various news programs.
I’ve worked on six television shows and three documentaries. I even received an offer from someone involved with a book about a very sensitive and disturbing topic – child pornography. Plus, I’ve been approached about appearing on podcasts both in the United Kingdom and the United States.
Mr Tomes briefed Edwards on the offers on Wednesday before stepping away from being his publicist.
I was so shocked to hear that John Edwards, the newsreader I used to watch all the time, admitted to creating indecent images back in July 2024. It was really upsetting. He ended up with a six-month sentence, but it was suspended, meaning he didn’t actually have to go to prison, and that was decided in September of that year.
The pictures included seven of the most serious type of images – classified as category A – which convicted sex offender Alex Williams had sent to him via WhatsApp.
Edwards is planning a return to public life because he’s upset with a recent Channel 5 drama featuring Martin Clunes, believing it portrays him unfairly.
He suggested this week that he plans to publicly discuss the circumstances surrounding his conviction for possessing indecent images of children later in the year.
Edwards criticized the program as unfair and suggested he’ll have a chance to share his perspective later this year.
We’ve learned he’s been approached about creating a documentary, podcast, or TV show, but it’s unclear if he’s accepted any of those opportunities.
Tomes stated he stopped working with Edwards without accepting any payment. This came shortly after a difficult interview on Good Morning Britain where he was questioned about representing a convicted sex offender.
As a lifestyle commentator, I’ve been following the recent discussions sparked by Channel 5’s report, and I’ve noticed a lot has been said and written about it over the past week. It feels like the coverage has really focused on one particular perspective, and I wanted to offer some additional context.
I’ll have further chances later this year to share my perspective and address the inaccurate information that’s been reported recently.
‘A number of serious questions still remain to be answered, and not just by me.
I need some time to share my own perspective, and I won’t be making any further statements until I’m ready.
Tomes announced he’s no longer the lawyer for the man convicted of child abuse, after initially providing a week of free legal publicity. He shared this information with reporters in a formal statement.
As a media professional, I’ve been following the recent attention around the Channel 5 drama, ‘Power,’ closely. Given the intense media coverage over the last ten days, I offered my services – completely free of charge – to Huw Edwards for a week to help him navigate the situation and offer some media guidance. I felt it was important to lend my expertise during this challenging time.
‘This offer was made by me and not sought by Edwards.
I met with Huw Edwards today and gave him all the messages I’d received, along with a brief overview of each one.
‘Many included offers for interviews, documentaries and other forms of media activity.
I’ve made it clear I’m not trying to get media coverage for Edwards, and I have nothing more to say on the matter.
The publicist was on Good Morning Britain last week to talk about the Channel 5 show, but the discussion soon shifted to the reasons behind their representation of Edwards.
During a discussion about the newsreader’s behavior, Ed Balls questioned why the individual was attempting to understand it, specifically pointing out that he had previously chosen to represent someone convicted of possessing highly disturbing images and had admitted guilt in court.
I just want to understand why this happens in general, why do men with power act this way,” Tomes explained.
Ed retorted: ‘But you’re not investigating, you’re his publicist. You’re telling his story.’
This news follows recent turmoil at the BBC, which fired Radio 2 host Scott Mills due to serious sexual misconduct allegations from the 1990s.
It’s now been revealed that the BBC was aware for several years that Mills had been questioned by the Metropolitan Police in 2018 regarding the accusations. However, prosecutors decided not to pursue the case due to insufficient evidence.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve been following this story closely. It’s come to light that the broadcaster only decided to let Mills go after discovering his accuser was a minor – under 16 years old – when the alleged incidents took place. This detail significantly changed the situation and prompted their action.
Mills stated yesterday that he completely cooperated with the investigation, which began in 2016.
Given that this issue involves an allegation from almost 30 years ago, and the police investigated and closed the case seven years ago, I hope the public and the media will respect my decision not to discuss it further.
I’m deeply grateful to everyone who has shown me kindness, especially my former coworkers and my wonderful listeners, whom I miss very much.
