Hutchinson triumphs on a trail blazed by only two other women in Team Great Britain history

As a gamer with a deep appreciation for sports and an affinity for the underdog, I find myself utterly captivated by the tale of Keely Hodgkinson. This young woman from Wigan has not only proven her mettle on the track but has carved out a unique niche in the annals of British athletics history.

As a devoted sports enthusiast, I can’t help but marvel at the formidable competitors gracing the women’s 800-meter final stage in the recent event. These eight athletes were about to undergo an arduous test of endurance, with several promising candidates vying for the coveted medals. Among them was Mary Moraa, the 2023 World Champion hailing from Kenya, who displayed a commendable finishing time of 1 minute, 57.42 seconds. The Ethiopian powerhouse Tsige Duguma, who claimed the World Championship title in this category in 2024, outperformed her with an impressive time of 1:57.15, just a mere .27 seconds ahead.

Unstoppable and Untouchable

In Lane 5, it was the 22-year-old Keely Hodgkinson from Wigan who sprinted triumphantly across the finish line in Tokyo during 2021. That very same year, she shattered the world record for the under-20 age group in the 800 meters. Just two months later, she became the youngest British athlete to clinch a gold medal at the European Indoor championships. However, her impressive achievements didn’t start there. At just 16 years old, she was the first junior woman to run the 800 meter in less than two minutes.

In a noteworthy accomplishment, she clinched the gold medal with a time of 1 minute, 56.72 seconds, making her the third woman on Team Great Britain to claim gold in this particular sport, as announced with pride by Team Great Britain’s official website.

The 22-year-old raced clear of the field with 50m to go and crossed the line in a time of 1:56.72 to take the line and fulfil he pre-race favourite tag….and with Moraa sat on her shoulder coming around the final bend, Hodgkinson kicked on to take the gold and make history on the athletics track and even had hance to crack a glance at the big screen.

Sportsbeat 2024

He emotional reaction to her victory was well-earned. Said Hodgkinson, “I’ve worked so hard over the last year and you could see how much it meant to me as I crossed that line.”

Many individuals were rooting for her, with the BBC broadcasting a scene of Hodgkinson’s friends and relatives assembled before the race at the Leigh Athletic Club, eagerly waiting to catch her competition.

Third of her kind

For the first time, a British woman claimed the gold medal in the 800-meter race was Ann Packer, who was 22 at that time and born in March. In 1964, she ran the race in 2:01.1 as a physical education teacher from Surrey. According to Packer herself, “Women’s middle distance running was barely out of its cradle, and the 800 meters had only been contested in Rome four years prior.”

In the Athens 2004 games, forty years after Packer’s achievement, Kelly Holmes mirrored his footsteps by winning two gold medals for Britain. She added another gold to her collection in the 1500-meter race, making her the first British athlete in 84 years to win two golds.

We hope to see this proud tradition for British women continue in games to come.
