‘Hunger Games’ studio Lionsgate to partner with AI company
As a lifelong cinephile who’s spent countless hours behind the camera and in the editing suite, I must say the fusion of AI and Hollywood is both intriguing and slightly nerve-wracking. On one hand, the potential for cost reduction and streamlining production processes is undeniable. However, as someone who’s seen the blood, sweat, and tears that go into creating a movie, I can’t help but worry about the impact AI might have on the human element of filmmaking.
Lionsgate is teaming up with AI research firm Runway for the first time in a partnership, aiming to develop and educate a novel AI model tailored to their “Hunger Games” and “John Wick” movie and television library content. This collaboration will be Runway’s debut project with a Hollywood studio.
On Wednesday, they shared that I’ll be creating captivating footage which can later be fine-tuned using the versatile toolkit offered by Runway, a creative powerhouse based in sunny Santa Monica. (Movie buff translation: They announced that this machine will produce cinematic scenes, which can then be polished with the powerful tools provided by Runway, a studio located in cool Santa Monica.)
In a statement, Lionsgate Vice Chair Michael Burns noted that various filmmakers at their studio are already thrilled about the possibilities of Artificial Intelligence in both the pre-production and post-production stages.
He stated that we consider Artificial Intelligence as an effective aid to improve, strengthen, and support our existing work processes.
As a film enthusiast, I’ve noticed that AI has become a tricky topic in Tinseltown. The studios are eager to leverage this cutting-edge tech to cut costs and enhance efficiency, but they’re equally concerned about hurting the feelings of actors, writers, and crew members who worry that AI might steal their jobs.
Besides Runway, several other AI companies have begun venturing into the world of entertainment. In fact, the creators of ChatGPT, OpenAI, are actively engaging with industry professionals to showcase their cutting-edge technology in this field.
On Wednesday, YouTube announced plans to roll out Veo, an AI-driven text-to-video tool, for YouTube Shorts creators later this year. By inputting phrases like “dreamlike secret garden, vibrant colors, visible brushstrokes,” creators can generate a six-second video that visually represents the description. Notably, YouTube stated that videos produced with AI will be clearly marked as such.
YouTube is planning to introduce an “AI-driven brainstorming partner” within its YouTube Studio, which aims to propose creative video ideas to content creators, potentially enhancing their production projects.
Sarah Ali, senior director of product at YouTube, mentioned during a presentation at the Made on YouTube event in New York on Wednesday, that creators are particularly drawn to how the platform helps them discover hidden aspects of their ideas that they hadn’t previously thought of. She clarified that this doesn’t mean replacing their original ideas, but rather offering tools to help them reach their goals quicker or explore fresh perspectives they hadn’t contemplated before.
