Hunger Games Prequel Just Made The Perfect Casting For Returning Franchise Character
In the upcoming movie “The Hunger Games: Sunrise at the Reaping” (released in 2026), a significant character from the series returns. This film is based on Suzanne Collins’ novel published in 2025, sharing the same title and serving as a prequel to the Hunger Games trilogy. The storyline revolves around the Fiftieth Hunger Games where Haymitch Abernathy, later to be Katniss’ mentor, competed. Francis Lawrence, the long-standing director of the franchise, is at the helm for this production. Joseph Zada portrays Haymitch, Whitney Peak plays his girlfriend Lenore Dove Baird, and Mckenna Grace takes on the role of fellow District 12 tribute Maysilee Donner in the film.
In a recent announcement, Lionsgate revealed that actor Jesse Plemons is set to join the cast of “The Hunger Games: Sunrise at the Reaping,” portraying the character Plutarch Heavensbee. Originally played by Philip Seymour Hoffman in the initial movies, Plutarch was a pivotal figure as both the Head Gamemaker and a covert leader of a rebellion within those films. Previous speculation about Plemons’ involvement has now been confirmed, as he previously acted alongside Philip Seymour Hoffman in the 2012 film “The Master.” Here are statements from Lionsgate Motion Picture Group co-president Erin Westerman and producer Nina Jacobson regarding Jesse Plemons’ casting:
Erin Westerman: “We are beyond thrilled to welcome Jesse Plemons to the ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise at the Reaping’ family. His talent, versatility, and ability to bring depth to every character he plays make him a perfect fit for Plutarch Heavensbee.”
Nina Jacobson: “Jesse brings an extraordinary range and emotional resonance that will add yet another layer of complexity to this beloved character. We can’t wait to see him step into the role of Plutarch Heavensbee.
Erin Westerman: Jesse is undeniably one of the most gifted actors of his time, known for being choosy about his roles. It’s an honor that he’s decided to put his unique spin on one of the most intriguing characters from Panem. His past work with Philip Seymour Hoffman adds a touch of magic to this collaboration. We believe that Jesse’s portrayal of Plutarch will be a tribute to the character fans are familiar with, as well as an interpretation that is uniquely his own. We eagerly anticipate audiences getting a chance to witness it.
Nina Jacobson: Jesse has been one of my preferred actors since I initially watched him in ‘Friday Night Lights.’ Right from the beginning, it was clear that only a seasoned actor could portray a young Plutarch. Jesse was our top choice from day one, and we’re thrilled to welcome him into the Hunger Games family.
