Hunger Games prequel finally confirms casting for young Haymitch

The Hunger Games prequel Sunrise on the Reaping has finally cast young Haymitch Abernathy.

In the critically acclaimed movie franchise starring Woody Harrelson, Haymitch stands out as the sole surviving Hunger Games champion, until the introduction of Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, who hail from District 12 and are its second victors.

He guides Katniss and Peeta, collaborates with District 13 and fellow victors to instigate the second uprising, which was a significant civil conflict within Panem known as the Second Rebellion, ultimately overthrowing the rule of President Snow.

In Suzanne Collins’ upcoming novel titled “Sunrise on the Reaping“, Haymitch serves as the central character, and a movie based on this book is scheduled for release on November 20, 2026.

In the upcoming movie, actor Joseph Zada from “Invisible Boys” and “Total Control,” will take on the role of the younger Haymitch. Additionally, it’s been revealed that Whitney Peak will portray Haymitch’s romantic interest, Lenore Dove Baird.

In addition, Zada will make an appearance in the forthcoming Prime Video series “We Were Liars,” set to debut in June, following the completion of filming. Previously, Zada finished production on Netflix’s “East of Eden,” which features Florence Pugh and Mike Faist as co-stars.

Regarding the casting, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group co-president Erin Westerman commented: “The Hunger Games franchise has historically provided a platform for exceptional young talents, and Jo and Whitney continue this tradition with their heartfelt, profound, and passionate performances.

Following the evaluation of numerous talented artists worldwide, it was these two individuals who truly shone – not merely due to their skills, but because they infused these renowned roles with a profound sense of emotional authenticity. Haymitch, a character cherished by many, is particularly awaited as his backstory promises to be one of the most intriguing in the series.

The bond between him and Lenore Dove plays a significant role in the emotional tapestry of Panem. Readers are eagerly anticipating delving into the tale that sculpted such an intriguing character within this series.

Nina Jacobson praised Zada, stating that he was meticulously prepared and managed to win everyone’s affection.

As a dedicated gamer, I was part of an extensive, tiring quest to discover a talented young performer who could bring young Haymitch to life. I studied hard and won us all over, as they say in the gaming world.

Later, Whitney astonished us by portraying Lenore Dove. Combining the two of them felt like one of those enchanting instances in casting where it feels as if your journey has culminated in finding the perfect fit.

This year, I’ve been diving into a captivating tale – one that follows Haymitch Abernathy’s odyssey during the 50th installment of the Hunger Games. His path eventually intertwines with none other than Katniss Everdeen, transforming him from an adversary to a crucial ally in her struggle.

At the break of dawn on November 20, 2026, “Sunrise on the Reaping,” a prequel to the Hunger Games series, will hit the big screen. The novel with the same title is already available for purchase. You can grab your copy here.
