Now that the revival series is out and doing well on Disney+, a funny fan theory is making the rounds again. It suggests that Hal from is actually Walter White from, living under a new identity in the witness protection program. Originally, it was just a playful idea to link the two characters, but some viewers are starting to think there might be something to it when they re-watch the original series.
It sounds far-fetched, but some viewers are starting to wonder if Hal from the original series and Walter White are the same person. Certain similarities in their personalities, when you look back, almost seem like hints. While the timelines don’t match up and they have different backgrounds, it’s an interesting idea to consider. The new revival series, along with re-watching the original, has sparked this theory among fans all over again.
How Hal Actually Compares to Walter White
Hal is a kind but ordinary man, a husband and father to four mischievous boys (and later, even more children). He works a dull office job to support his family. He’s intentionally unremarkable, much like Walter White was at the start of the show Breaking Bad.
Walter is a humble high school chemistry teacher working hard to support his family. He secretly feels unfulfilled, a feeling tied to his past with a company called Gray Matter. We later discover he played a key, but unacknowledged, part in the scientific breakthroughs that made the company successful.
Watching the show again with my teenage son, it’s clear you can see parts of Walter’s personality in Hal. For instance, in one episode from the first season, Lois goes away for a few days to visit their older son, Frances, at military school, leaving Hal to look after the kids by himself.
Okay, so this episode really digs into Hal’s hidden past. Apparently, before Lois came along, he was a total rebel, something the boys are completely shocked to learn! His wife claims it took years to get him under control, and without her around, old habits start creeping back. It’s hilarious and a little scary to watch him take over Malcolm’s robot project and build this genuinely intimidating machine in the backyard. Things escalate quickly, leading to a full-blown standoff as the boys try to prevent their dad from doing something completely reckless with it. It’s classic Hal – unpredictable and utterly entertaining.
Hal falls into a state of disarray, binge-eating junk food and smoking cigarettes, which deeply shocks Malcolm. He explains to his son that his mother previously helped him quit. Hal looks exhausted, with bloodshot eyes and dark circles, revealing a side of himself Malcolm has never witnessed. It’s a disturbing transformation, reminiscent of Walter at his worst.
We see hints of a more intense side to Hal, like when he physically fights a coworker who stole his work. Lois has to intervene and stop him. Even when he’s just scolding his sons, there’s a brief, unsettling intensity in his gaze, reminiscent of Walter White.
So Many Scenes Are Viewed Differently
The creators of Malcolm in the Middle didn’t plan for the show to hint at anything specific. However, viewers have noticed connections and are pointing them out.
In a classic moment from Season 1, Hal attempts to explain attraction to his sons, describing what happens when a boy and girl are drawn to each other. Viewers find the scene humorous, especially considering Hal’s discussion of ‘chemistry’ is very different from the kind his brother, Walter White, deals with.
In one episode of Season 2, the family takes a vacation to a Native American reservation. During their trip, Hal and Malcolm get arrested after it’s revealed Hal was cheating at the casino. Malcolm had been secretly helping him by counting cards and signaling to his dad. Hal jokingly claims they were just spending quality time together.
The owner, looking stern and upset, states, “My son and I cook.” Hal notices this and, turning to Malcolm with a smile, replies, “We’ll have to try that.” This phrase is echoed by the character Walter White, who often says “let’s cook”—or something similar—to his student, Jesse Pinkman, as a coded reference to making drugs.
During that same episode, Hal, Malcolm, and Reese find themselves in a risky situation – an army training ground filled with explosions, reminiscent of a scene from Breaking Bad. Earlier in Season 1, the family battles a bug problem, and Hal and Lois don protective respirator masks, similar to the ones Hal uses while making drugs with Jesse.
In one episode, Malcolm asks Hal to teach him how to roller skate, but Reese cautions him that Hal’s lessons won’t be what he expects. It turns out Hal was a competitive roller skater and is incredibly dedicated to the sport. The scene then cuts to Hal explaining to Malcolm just how seriously he’s about to train him, in a way that feels reminiscent of Walter White lecturing Jesse Pinkman.
If the continuation of Malcolm in the Middle hadn’t happened, there was a fun theory that Hal could have actually been Walter White from Breaking Bad in disguise. The idea was that Hal might have had an affair with Skyler and fathered Walter Jr., or that Skyler and Walter Jr. were connected to Hal, leading him to abandon his family and start a new life. This was an alternative explanation for where Hal ended up.
His past with Gretchen (Jessica Hecht), who was both a girlfriend and business partner, doesn’t quite add up in some places. However, for those writing fan fiction, here’s another equally wild – and enjoyable – possibility to explore.
The Hilarious Alternate Ending
Adding fuel to these ideas was a scene released in late 2013. It depicts Hal waking up in bed with Lois after having a nightmare where he was a frightening and dangerous drug dealer.
He nervously recalls details from the show, deeply disturbed by the person he had become. He jokes, “The only thing that made any sense was that I still walked around in my underwear.” The scene concludes with Hal saying “Good night, Skyler” to Lois, followed by a shot of his black pork pie hat resting on the chair next to his bed.
I always thought about how Breaking Bad showed a normal guy, Walter White, changing so much after his cancer diagnosis. It made me wonder if, somehow, he really did survive everything. It wouldn’t be that crazy to imagine him starting a new life, maybe even meeting someone like Lois, getting married to keep up appearances, and having another family. It just feels… possible, given how much he transformed.
The timelines don’t quite add up, but it’s a fan theory we’re happy to believe anyway! With the show’s recent popularity on streaming, people are revisiting old discussions and drawing comparisons. And honestly, who are we to disagree with a good theory?
As soon as audiences see Hal behaving recklessly, it will remind them of Walter White cooking meth in a remote desert trailer. Any hint of defiance from Hal will inevitably bring Walter White to mind. Even when Hal’s usually playful, a stern look from him will make you question what he’s really thinking. Both characters showcase Bryan Cranston’s incredible range as an actor.
Vince Gilligan, the creator of Breaking Bad, noticed something special in Bryan Cranston when he appeared on The X-Files—before Cranston became known for dramatic roles. This made Gilligan see past Cranston’s previous work in comedy. Gilligan apparently strongly advocated for Cranston to play Walter White, suggesting there’s a surprising depth to Cranston’s portrayal, or at least, it’s enjoyable to think there is.
