Tim McGraw, known for his music and acting in 1883, will star in the upcoming Hulu series based on the comic book Southern Bastards. This marks his first big acting job since 1883.
McGraw will star in the pilot alongside Erin Kellyman and Kevin Bacon. He’s set to play the role of Coach Euless Boss. Matt Olmstead is the showrunner, and Reinaldo Marcus Green will direct the pilot episode, based on a script written by Bill Dubuque.
What Is Southern Bastards About?
The TV series Southern Bastards is adapted from the award-winning 2014 comic book by Jason Aaron and Jason Latour. It’s a dark story set in a Southern town where football is everything, and crime runs deep.
I’m completely captivated by Coach Boss, the character played by McGraw! He’s this incredibly compelling figure – a high school football coach by day, but secretly a powerful crime lord. It’s such a fascinating duality! And then there’s Roberta Tubb, brought to life by Kellyman, a tough ex-Marine with a personal vendetta against Boss. Their conflict is absolutely gripping; you really feel the tension building between them as she seeks her revenge.
Southern Bastards ran for 21 issues, concluding in 2018.
Tim McGraw’s First Big Role Since the Yellowstone Franchise
With his role in Southern Bastards, Tim McGraw is back on television after playing James Dutton in 1883, the prequel to Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone. He was a part of 1883 from 2021 to 2022, and also appeared in two episodes of Yellowstone Season 4 in 2021.
Tim McGraw first gained recognition as an actor in 2004 with roles in Black Cloud and Friday Night Lights. He later appeared in popular films like Flicka, Tomorrowland, and Four Christmases, among others.
What We Know About Hulu’s Southern Bastards Pilot
Hulu revealed plans to create a series based on Southern Bastards in October 2025. Initially, Nia DeCosta, the director of films like 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple and Candyman, was set to direct the first episode, but Green ultimately took over that role.
Southern Bastards has yet to receive a premiere date.
