Wolverine, much like his dedicated fanbase, consistently has to fight to uncover what’s really happening. As excitement builds for big Marvel movie releases like Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday, there’s a noticeable lack of information about Logan – a hugely popular and iconic X-Men character brought to life by Hugh Jackman for over two decades.
While Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine made a fantastic comeback in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine with Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool, it hasn’t been officially announced if he’ll be in any of the upcoming Phase 6 Marvel projects. It would be surprising if he didn’t return, but details about when and where he might appear are still unconfirmed.
The acclaimed actor recently spoke with Digital Spy, but remained very vague about whether he’ll continue playing his character in future Marvel Cinematic Universe films.
“Maybe.”
Ah, hope! It lives!
I’m done using the word ‘never’ completely. I used to believe something would last forever, but I always have the option to change my mind. I held that belief for several years. Now that I’ve made ten movies, there’s definitely enough footage to create an AI version of me!
Now, it would be smart for Hugh Jackman to stop considering retirement and remain open to future appearances as Wolverine. He and Marvel Studios previously did this in the 2017 film Logan, a deeply emotional story where Wolverine became a father figure to his clone, X-23 (played by Dafne Keen). Keen reprises her role in Deadpool & Wolverine, and the film beautifully concludes that storyline, even giving fans the first look at Wolverine’s classic X-Men suit in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
When Will Wolverine Regenerate in the MCU?
With Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige now handling the X-Men, it seems highly likely Hugh Jackman will reprise his role as Wolverine one last time. Several original cast members from the 20th Century Fox films are already confirmed to return, including James Marsden as Cyclops, Kelsey Grammar as Beast, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, and Patrick Stewart as Professor X. However, it’s unclear if Famke Janssen will return as Jean Grey, a character closely linked to both Cyclops and Wolverine, leaving some uncertainty about the future of that storyline.
It seems obvious that Hugh Jackman, whom Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige hopes will play Wolverine for many years to come, will sign a new contract – if he hasn’t already. However, nothing is certain until it’s official. Most people expect to see Jackman reprise the role by the time Avengers: Secret Wars comes out in 2027, but anyone with inside information isn’t sharing details.
Deadpool & Wolverine is currently streaming on Disney+.
