Hugh Jackman, who plays Wolverine in the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine movie, has hinted at what his future might hold within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He’s been a consistent presence as Wolverine in the X-Men films, appearing in almost every movie – either as the main character or in a smaller role. The exceptions were Dark Phoenix, The New Mutants, and the first two Deadpool movies.
Most of those films didn’t include Wolverine because his character died in the 2017 movie Logan. However, Hugh Jackman returned to play Wolverine in the 2024 blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine – marking the first time either character appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, following Disney’s purchase of 20th Century Studios. This version of Wolverine came from a different universe.
I was so excited to hear Hugh Jackman talk about coming back as Wolverine! He was chatting with Cynthia Erivo for Variety‘s Actors on Actors – he’s been promoting his new film, Song Sung Blue, and she asked him about Deadpool & Wolverine. He explained what made him decide to put the claws back on, and it was really interesting to hear his reasons.
I always thought Wolverine’s story ended perfectly with Logan, and apparently, Hugh Jackman felt the same way at first! He really wanted that movie to be the final goodbye. But then, he read the script for the new movie and it totally changed his mind. He said it reminded him of a classic buddy cop film like 48 Hours, and once he realized that, he was so excited to come back as Wolverine in a completely different way. He even said it was “so awesome” to revisit the character like that!
Hugh Jackman initially thought his role as Wolverine was truly over after the movie Logan, but he now says it doesn’t feel that way anymore. You can read his complete statement below.
I’ve realized that acknowledging the close of a chapter is just as important as celebrating a new beginning. While stepping away from Wolverine didn’t initially feel final, the movie “Logan” truly felt like a conclusive ending. I strongly believed in what that film needed to be, and I fought to make it happen, even declaring it would be my last time playing the role. Then, seeing “Deadpool” gave me a different perspective – it reminded me of classic buddy cop films. I tried to dismiss the idea of returning, telling myself and everyone else that I was done. But eventually, I realized it was okay to change my mind. I decided not to apologize and embraced the chance to revisit the character, which felt fantastic.
