Hugh Grant says new Bridget Jones film is “very sad”

As a long-time fan of the Bridget Jones franchise, I must say that I am both excited and apprehensive about the upcoming fourth installment, “Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy”. Having grown up with these films, it’s heartening to see the cast reassembling once more after such a long hiatus. However, knowing the tragic real-life events that inspired Helen Fielding for this novel makes me wonder if laughter will be as abundant as tears in this film.

Bridget Jones’s Diary star Hugh Grant has called the upcoming film “very, very sad”.

In the upcoming fourth movie of the series due for release on Valentine’s Day 2025, the actor once again takes on his legendary character, Daniel Cleaver.

According to Helen Fielding’s third book titled “Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy”, we find Bridget (played by Renée Zellweger) dealing with single parenthood as she raises her two kids, a situation that arises after the demise of her husband, Mark Darcy (portrayed by Colin Firth).

Despite being famous for humorous and uncomfortable situations, Grant revealed that the upcoming storyline will draw from Fielding’s actual life hardship.

On the Graham Norton Show, he shared a heartbreaking tale. He mentioned that she wed an American screenwriter, had kids together, and tragically, he passed away.

Grant made clear that Fielding’s new novel revolved around a woman single-handedly rearing her kids, and as it turned out, the lead character bore some resemblance to Bridget.

He remarked, “She turned it into a novel reminiscent of ‘Bridget Jones’,” he added, “It’s not only incredibly humorous but also deeply poignant.

Following his absence in Bridget Jones’s Baby, he originally believed that his character had no part in the fourth movie at all. However, they eventually decided to include him, as he put it.

In the initial movies, Grant’s character displayed a pattern of being a chronic ladies’ man. However, when it comes to the plot for Daniel in “Mad About The Boy,” the actor expressed some uncertainty.

I thought their idea was acceptable, but not exceptional. Additionally, I believe he requires more depth; he’s in his sixties, and it’s not appropriate for him to be leisurely strolling along King’s Road, checking out younger women.

He clarified, “Clearly something must’ve occurred during that period.” So, we concocted an engaging – I came up with an engaging – tale to fill in the gap instead.

The script is genuinely excellent and touching, which is surprising coming from someone like me who isn’t fond of scripts. Still, this one was exceptional,” he commented.

The movie adaptation of “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy” is set to hit theaters on Valentine’s Day, 2025. If you haven’t seen the previous Bridget Jones films yet, you can catch them streaming right now on Netflix!
