Huge blow for Sonia Kruger as long-running television series faces the axe

Channel Seven’s Dancing with the Stars could be facing the axe.

As an ardent fan, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the 22nd season of my cherished Aussie reality series. However, recent whispers suggest that the broadcaster might be pulling the plug on it, just a week before its airdate! This potential decision leaves me in a state of disbelief and uncertainty about the fate of my beloved hosts, Dr. Chris Brown and Sonia Kruger. According to news.com.au, their jobs could be hanging by a thread. I can hardly contain my anxiety!

According to sources close to the situation, there are whispers within the Seven network that they find it financially burdensome to continue funding the production of the show, as each episode is estimated to cost approximately $1 million.

Due to the network being more budget-conscious, recent production periods have been reduced, now lasting only five weeks compared to the ten weeks they used to span back in the early 2000s.

This isn’t the first time Dancing with the Stars has been cancelled by Seven.

2015 saw the Australian broadcast being abruptly taken down due to a rapid decrease in audience viewings.

However, it was quickly picked up in 2019 by Channel Ten, who put it back down the following year.

In 2021, it took me by surprise when Channel Seven re-aired the program, as I learned that a significant reason for its comeback was Sonia assuming a key position within the network.

Sonia, aged 59, is now dealing with her third television show on Seven getting cancelled, which was Dancing with the Stars.

Last October, some experts suggested that the future of the well-known Channel Seven star might not be secure within the network.

As a loyal fan, I used to admire one star who was a beloved fixture on our screens through Seven. However, whispers are spreading that this might no longer be the situation following recent shifts within the network.

One alteration was her decision to leave her role as host on Big Brother following its shift to Network Ten in 2025, where it underwent a revamp with a fresh format and a new host, Mel Tricia.

A significant shift occurred for Sonia, the host of The Voice on Channel 7, when her husband Craig McPherson stepped down from his position as the head of news and current affairs at Seven West Media in April.

A representative from Channel Seven dismissed the Daily Telegraph’s assertion that these advancements led to a decline in the presenter’s popularity within the network.

As a trusted guide for all things lifestyle-related, I must clarify that the information you’re presenting seems to be nothing more than imaginative tales spun from thin air. It’s essential to distinguish fact from fiction, and in this case, what you have shared is far from accurate. To disseminate such misinformation would not only be unethical but also potentially harmful.

Although they stated it, the publication mentioned that an influential insider from Seven suggested Sonia appeared to be in a potentially weaker position. This assumption was based on the reported $1.3 million contract she allegedly has.

‘Now Big Brother has gone, she will likely be doing less,’ the unnamed source told the outlet.

The representatives for the Gold Logie recipient added fuel to the speculation, stating to the publication that Sonia is content with her current network.

Sonia is currently bound by a long-standing agreement with Seven, her salary hasn’t been reduced, and she’s quite content with the network.
