Huawei App Store drops Tencent’s games from its top game rankings

As a long-time follower of the mobile gaming industry, particularly in China, I’ve witnessed the dynamic between Tencent and Huawei with great interest. Their latest disagreement has taken an unexpected turn, leaving me both intrigued and concerned.

Tencent Games and Huawei, two significant Chinese companies in the realm of gaming, have found themselves in an undeclared feud, which has escalated their existing disagreements. Noteworthy information suggests that most mobile games from Tencent are no longer visible in the Huawei App Market‘s charts.

NetEase Games have now occupied the top charts in the Huawei App Store, snubbing Tencent out of the list

Based on a SCMP report, nearly all of Tencent’s mobile games are no longer visible in Huawei’s app store charts. The situation has worsened as NetEase Games, another major Chinese video game company, has taken over the top spots with their titles “Eggy Party,” “Identity V,” and “Fantasy Westward Journey.”

Last month, Tencent took down its popular action-RPG game, “Dungeon and Fighter Mobile,” from various Android markets such as Huawei, Oppo, and Vivo due to licensing issues. This incident marked the start of a growing rivalry between Tencent and Huawei, with the dispute serving as an apparent cause.

In the domestic market, Huawei, a major mobile brand, accounts for approximately 43 percent of the sales. The company also plays an influential role in the distribution of video games in China. Previously, there had been conflicts between these corporations: back in 2021, several Tencent games were momentarily taken down from Huawei’s app market. Nonetheless, after negotiations ensued, the games were restored to the platform shortly afterward.

In my opinion, this situation seems reminiscent of the long-standing conflict between Apple and Epic. However, I’m not expecting any lawsuits to ensue as users can still find other Tencent apps in Huawei’s app marketplace. Let’s cross our fingers and hope that there’s no further tension between these tech giants, as they both stand to lose if they exclude each other from their markets.
