How, when and where to watch the Vance-Walz vice presidential debate

As a supporter who has always been intrigued by the stories of individuals who defy expectations and rise against all odds, I am genuinely excited about the upcoming debate between Ohio Sen. JD Vance and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz. Their life experiences are nothing short of inspiring!

On Tuesday evening, CBS News will be staging a debate featuring Ohio Senator JD Vance and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who are both contenders for the vice presidency.

In the closing arguments to potential voters before the upcoming election, both candidates will vigorously endorse their respective running mates, including former Republican President Donald Trump and Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris, who were once their political partners in office.

Vance, famed for his book “Hillbilly Elegy,” had a stint in the Marine Corps followed by a career in San Francisco as a venture capitalist. However, he later went back to his home state of Ohio and secured a position as senator in 2022.

Originating from Nebraska, Walz transitioned to Minnesota later in life. His career spanned over two decades with the Army National Guard, alongside roles as a high school instructor and football coach. Subsequently, he spent twelve years as a congressional representative before being chosen for two terms as Minnesota’s governor.

They’re set to clash at the CBS Television City in New York for the discussion, but it won’t have a live audience.

When is the debate?

The debate begins at 6 p.m. PDT.

It will run for 90 minutes, with two four-minute breaks.

How can I watch it?

CBS is set to broadcast the debate across multiple channels: CBS Television Network, Paramount+, CBS News around the clock, CBSNews.com, and their YouTube channel.

Most other major networks will air the simulcast of the debate.

Who are the moderators?

CBS News anchor and senior editor Norah O’Donnell, as well as “Face the Nation” host and lead foreign affairs reporter Margaret Brennan, will serve as moderators.

How will it work?

In the last two presidential debates, the methods used during these discussions – one featuring Trump and President Biden, another involving Trump and Vice President Harris – sparked disagreements between the competing campaigns.

The network stated that moderators have the ability to mute the candidates’ microphones if necessary. If not, their microphones will remain active.

For every question posed, each contestant will have the opportunity to speak for two minutes to provide their answer, followed by another two minutes to deliver their response or clarification. Rebuttals, should they be necessary, will be allowed for a duration of one minute per participant.

During the live debate, moderators won’t be verifying facts themselves, but as The New York Times stated, CBS intends to show a QR code prominently throughout the event. This code allows viewers to access CBS’s website directly where their journalists will be fact-checking in real-time.

Vance won a coin toss and chose to give the final closing statement.
