How Waleed Aly found out The Project was cancelled after 16 years: ‘It was the hardest day’

Following over a dozen years as the host of The Project, Waleed Aly is preparing for his post-prime-time TV life and the novelty of being able to eat dinner at home.

In my role as a lifestyle guide, I must share a personal experience similar to Stellar’s: when the news of the show’s termination reached me, despite having a slight heads-up, it was an unexpected jolt just the same.

‘I only knew for less than a week before it was public. So it was all fairly sudden,’ he said.

The toughest day undoubtedly was the one when the announcement was made, particularly because I was surrounded by my fellow team members, individuals I’ve collaborated with for over a decade.

Although Aly acknowledged that the gravity of the announcement wasn’t exclusive to the TV sector, he emphasized its profound impact, particularly on his own loved ones.

He mentioned, “This extra depth is given due to the fact that my children have grown up alongside this series. Discussing it with them turned out to be more challenging than I thought, as it affected them in ways I hadn’t fully foreseen.

Aly, the father of Aisha, 22, and Zayd, 18, together with his spouse Susan Carland, mentioned that readjusting to a normal family routine after some time feels both joyful and melancholic.

Instead of his long-standing routine of skipping family dinners because of his nighttime job, he’s planning a change towards a life style that involves more cooking and ample cleaning.

He’s excited about preparing more meals, but the thought of dealing with the huge pile of dirty dishes is daunting. It’s challenging for him to visualize beyond that stack.

Aly too realized that his kids have grown into young adults who might not be interested in spending extensive time with their parents anymore, which made the show’s conclusion seem like a regretted chance to recoup past moments that were once lost.

Regardless of the changes, Aly acknowledges that job losses and significant career transitions are common occurrences throughout various sectors of work.

He noted, “This isn’t something exclusive to our situation; it occurs frequently in various sectors and offices. Every time it happens, it’s always unfortunate.

The Project will air its final episode with Aly on Friday night.

The Project would be pulled from the schedule after 16 years and more than 4,500 episodes.

The last episode will broadcast on June 27, followed by a single nationwide evening news update at 6 PM instead.

Simultaneously, Channel Ten is pushing ahead with its significant makeover, ready to debut a fresh current affairs program.

As a devoted follower, I’m sharing some exciting updates about the project we all love. Our familiar faces, Waleed Aly, Sarah Harris, and Hamish Macdonald, are preparing to leave our network. However, comedian Taunton will still be gracing our screens with his appearances on various other Ten shows.

On June 27, the final installment will be broadcasted, as it will be substituted by a fresh news discussion program in its place.

Following the announcement that The Project would conclude last Monday, Ten unveiled a fresh statement revealing their upcoming revamped news program.

10 NEWS+, the top-tier news broadcast, will debut on your screens on Monday, June 30th, starting at 6 pm, both on Channel 10 and 10Play streaming service.

10 NEWS+ will air nationwide following Network 10’s 5 pm local news updates, providing in-depth insights on significant events that made headlines today.

As stated by Paramount Australia, the segment is designed to reshape the concept of evening news through offering in-depth analysis, reliable reporting, and extended investigative journalism.

In line with Australia’s ever-changing media landscape, our news program can be accessed through both traditional broadcast and streaming methods, along with digital and social media platforms.

During the 6pm news broadcast from Sunday to Thursday, viewers can expect familiar faces like Denham Hitchcock, a former 7News journalist, and Amelia Brace, a Walkley Award-winner, to regularly appear.

Ursula Heger and Hugh Riminton will take the lead during the Friday broadcast.

The main broadcasting crew will have the assistance of journalists such as Ashleigh Raper, Bill Hogan, Brianna Parkins, Samantha Butler, Carrie-Anne Greenbank, and Claudia Vrdoljak.

Entertainment Editor Angela Bishop from Ten will share her insights on the most significant entertainment news items, such as glamorous red-carpet occasions and intimate chats with A-list celebrities in Tinseltown.
