How Tyla Overcame Bullying for Her Skin Tone to Shine in Vogue Spotlight
Tyla openly shared her experiences of being targeted for her unique hair structure and complexion during her time at a predominantly Caucasian elementary school in South Africa, where she grew up.
23-year-old, known for her hits about water, was born in an area close to Johannesburg. She recounts having extremely challenging experiences during her initial years of education there.
Speaking to Vogue, she said the bullying made her ‘hate herself’ before she moved to high school.
She said: ‘I went to a very white primary school. I really hated myself.
Afterward, I attended a predominantly Black and richly cultural high school, and it was there that I truly learned to appreciate myself and developed immense pride in my identity.
For the Vogue photoshoot, she was simply stunning, flaunting her remarkable physique in a revealing red-and-white crop top and sleek black pants.

She donned a coordinated yellow-and-white polka dot ensemble that beautifully accentuated her long legs.
In the interview, she finally spoke up regarding the criticism she received for her conduct during the MTV Music Video Awards the previous year.
She faced criticism online as she passed the trophy to Lil Nas X during the award ceremony, since it proved quite weighty for her to manage while standing on stage.
She explained to Vogue that she became bewildered when others accused her of being entitled, as all she had done was ask her friend Lil Nas for assistance in holding something during her speech.
Friends, those trophies are quite hefty! In fact, just then, I had a crucial message to share. Frankly, I didn’t want my attention to be divided by the effort of holding onto this award.
During her acceptance speech for Best Afrobeats, Tyla was criticized by fans as they found her behavior overly flashy and felt she lacked the strength to keep holding her award, which they perceived as tacky.
She received an award for her 2023 song “Water”, and was greeted by actress Halle Bailey wearing a stylish red dress and rapper Lil Nas X, as she walked onto the stage at New York’s UBS Arena.
In a striking, strapless yellow gown with a fringed bottom, Tyla swiftly grabbed the silver moonman figure from Lil Nas X, who is 25 years old. However, she declined the winner’s award envelope that Halle, aged 24, attempted to give her.

The performer exclaimed in surprise, then noticed the statuette was quite hefty. Turning to the pair, she humbly requested, ‘I’m not up to the task, could you, pretty please, help me by holding it?’
In a casual, easy-to-understand style: With one child, Halle remained stationary and flashed a smile at the performer. Meanwhile, Lil Nas X swiftly moved forward to claim the award on her behalf as Tyla carried on with her speech during acceptance. However, fans didn’t appreciate her actions and voiced their opinions on social media.
In response to a viral video of an awkward incident being posted on Instagram, one person commented: “It’s despicable to ask Little Mermaid to hold your award; show some class!” Another user chimed in, saying: “I found that action quite tacky from her holding your award darling.
A third individual humorously commented, “Halle mentioned she’s only clutching her child,” and a fourth Instagram user noted, “The fact that Halle remained completely still requires examination.
A different person made fun of Tyla by saying: “Girl, you look like The Little Mermaid, and you aren’t taking home her award,” and another chimed in with: “Halle declined the offer, Nas didn’t have a say in it, laugh out loud.” (This version maintains the original meaning but uses simpler language and rearranges the sentences for clarity.)
Another spectator commented: ‘She’s strikingly beautiful, yet strangely peculiar. It seemed strange when she didn’t offer a hug or any recognition, and then asked him to hold the trophy instead.’
1. One individual stated: “She neither greeted nor recognized them, yet she wanted them to display the trophy as if they worked for her, chuckling amusingly,” and another commented: “She seems to be overly confident in herself!”
2. The first person said: “She didn’t even nod or say hello, but expected them to carry the trophy as if it was their job because of her, isn’t that funny?”, and the second added: “She acts like she’s the only one who matters!”
In her acceptance speech, Tyla expressed that the worldwide influence of her hit song demonstrates how African music can also thrive as popular music globally.
She remarked, “It’s incredibly unique, yet it’s tinged with sadness too, as I can see how easily all artists from Africa are categorized under the label of Afrobeats.

‘Although Afrobeats has dominated the scene and provided numerous opportunities, it’s crucial to remember that African music encompasses much more. It’s a vast, multifaceted entity that transcends the boundaries of Afrobeats alone.’
Afterward, she discussed her unique approach to creating Amapiano tunes, which is a blend of house, jazz, and an African genre called kwaito, originated in the 1990s.
Tyla stated, “I hail from South Africa, and I embody Amapiano, I embody my culture.” Before commending some of her fellow nominees in the Afrobeats category, she exclaimed, “Africa, we’re making our mark globally!
