How to watch the 2024 Emmys (and everything else you need to know)

As a longtime admirer of the Emmys and a devoted follower of television, I am beyond thrilled to witness this year’s nominations! The list is a testament to the diversity, creativity, and sheer talent that graces our screens today.

The second Primetime Emmy Awards of 2024 are upon us.

The upcoming 76th Emmy Awards, honoring the outstanding television programs of the 2023-24 season, is set to take place eight months following the ceremony for the 75th edition held in January. Notable nominees from popular series like “Shōgun,” “The Bear,” “Hacks,” “The Crown,” and “Baby Reindeer” will gather at the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live in Los Angeles on a Sunday for the real 2024 Emmy Awards event.

The shows “Shogun” and “The Bear” have picked up some early victories at this month’s Creative Arts Emmy Awards. Jamie Lee Curtis and Jon Bernthal won comedy guest acting awards for their performances in “The Bear”, while Néstor Carbonell from “Shogun” and Michaela Coel of “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” received the guest actor prizes in the drama category.

When are the Emmys? Didn’t we just have them?

On Sunday, the 76th Emmy Awards ceremony takes place at the Peacock Theater, located within L.A. Live. The three-hour live broadcast starts at 5 p.m. Pacific Time on ABC, and it can be watched the following day on Hulu.

The Emmy Awards, typically hosted in September, have reverted to their usual format this time around. However, due to the simultaneous strikes by the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA in 2023, the 75th Emmys were delayed from their original date and held in January instead.

This month’s Creative Arts Emmy Awards broadcast is set for airing on FXX this coming Saturday at 8 p.m., with a replay available on Hulu the following day.

How can I watch them?

To watch the live telecast, you’ll require cable access, a television with a digital antenna, or an over-the-top service that doesn’t have ongoing conflicts with Disney (unfortunately, DirecTV subscribers are not included). For those who’ve cut the cord, it’s necessary to be subscribed to live TV streaming services like Hulu+ Live TV or Fubo.

Those not concerned about seeing the event live can stream it on Hulu starting Monday.

The father-son duo, Eugene Levy and Dan Levy, who co-created and starred in the popular sitcom “Schitt’s Creek,” have been chosen to host this year’s event. In an interview with The Times’ television critic Robert Lloyd, they were likened to runners on a delayed victory lap: “Schitt’s Creek” won all seven main comedy categories at the 72nd Emmys in 2020, during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Levys said that their aim for the show is for it “to feel celebratory” with “a bit of an edge.”

Dan Levy mentioned that people seem quite thrilled because we’re not typically harsh stand-up comedians, and there will be a sense of coziness in the atmosphere. Eugene Levy added, “We aim to make it funny, but perhaps our approach is more compassionate and gentle.

When does the red carpet start and how can I watch it?

2 PM Pacific Time on E! marks the start of pre-event coverage featuring “Live From E! Countdown to the Emmys.” The red carpet segment, titled “Live From E!: Emmys,” hosted by Laverne Cox with Heather McMahan and Keltie Knight, begins at 3 PM.

On channel ABC, Robin Roberts and Will Reeve are set to host the live event “Red Carpet: Emmys 2022” starting at 4 PM Pacific Time. If you’re in Los Angeles, KTLA’s live red carpet broadcast will kick off an hour earlier, at 3 PM Pacific Time.

What shows and actors are nominated?

The Emmy-winning historical drama “Shōgun,” produced by FX and set in Japan, is competing for the Best Drama Series award alongside other nominees such as “The Crown,” “Fallout,” “The Gilded Age,” “The Morning Show,” “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” “Slow Horses,” and “The Three-Body Problem.” (It has already secured 14 wins at the Creative Arts Emmys.)

Jennifer Aniston, Carrie Coon, Maya Erskine, Anna Sawai, Imelda Staunton, and Reese Witherspoon have been nominated in the category of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. In the category of Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, the nominees are Donald Glover, Walton Goggins, Gary Oldman, Hiroyuki Sanada, Dominic West, and Idris Elba.

In the realm of comedies, last year’s victor “The Bear” is nominated again, joined by a group that includes “Abbott Elementary,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “Hacks,” “Only Murders in the Building,” “Palm Royale,” “Reservation Dogs,” and “What We Do in the Shadows.

The lead comedy actress field includes Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”), Ayo Edebiri (“The Bear”) and Jean Smart (“Hacks”), who have all previously won Emmys for their roles, as well as Selena Gomez (“Only Murders in the Building”), Kristen Wiig (“Palm Royale”) and Maya Rudolph (“Loot”). The lead comedy actor field features first-time nominees Matt Berry (“What We Do in the Shadows”) and D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai (“Reservation Dogs”) as well as Television Academy favorites Larry David (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”), Steve Martin (“Only Murders in the Building”), Martin Short (“Only Murders in the Building”) and the most recent winner of the category, Jeremy Allen White (“The Bear”).

Who will win an Emmy award?

Based on predictions from award forecasters like Glenn Whipp of The Times, it’s anticipated that “Shōgun,” “The Bear,” and “Baby Reindeer” will shine brightly during the awards ceremony.

This year’s Emmy Award winner for Best Comedy Series, “The Bear,” is predicted to secure victories in the categories of Best Comedy Series, Best Lead Actor in a Comedy (Jeremy White), and Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) again. However, it’s possible that more discussions will arise about whether “The Bear” truly qualifies as a comedy.

Previously acclaimed FX series “Shōgun” is widely recognized as a frontrunner in the drama categories. With 14 Creative Arts Emmys already under its belt, it’s expected to collect additional awards for Best Drama Series, Lead Actress in a Drama (Anna Sawai), and Lead Actor in a Drama (Hiroyuki Sanada) on Sunday evening.

This year’s ceremony will feature a variety of actors, as per custom, who have been selected to present awards. Among these are Christine Baranski from “The Gilded Age”, Matt Bomer from “Fellow Travelers”, Lily Gladstone from “Under the Bridge”, Selena Gomez from “Only Murders in the Building”, Greta Lee from “The Morning Show”, Steve Martin and Martin Short, both from “Only Murders in the Building”, Nava Mau from “Baby Reindeer”, Ebon Moss-Bachrach from “The Bear”, Jean Smart from “Hacks” and Kristen Wiig from “Palm Royale”.

Actors like Kathy Bates, Candice Bergen, Billy Crystal, Viola Davis, Allison Janney, Jane Lynch, Niecy Nash-Betts, Sam Richardson, Maya Rudolph, Dick Van Dyke, and Steven Yeun – who have previously won Emmy Awards – are set to present during this year’s broadcast.

The Television Academy hinted at a potential crossover event featuring the Olympics, with special appearances by medal-winning swimmers like Caeleb Dressel and rugby players such as Ilona Maher, who triumphed in the Paris Games.
