How to unlock ranked in Overwatch 2

As an old-school gamer with decades of FPS battles under my belt, I must say that Overwatch 2 has piqued my interest with its competitive game mode. However, it seems that this ranked play is locked behind a few hurdles, much like a secret room in an old school video game.

Unlock this game mode to test your skills against other players in competitive play.

As an enthusiastic Overwatch 2 gamer, here’s my take on unlocking the competitive game mode:

Overwatch 2 ranked requirements

As a fan eagerly anticipating Overwatch 2, I’ve learned that to access the ranked game mode, I need to complete the First Time User Experience (FTUE) if my account is relatively new, created on or after October 4, 2022. Fortunately, if I own the Watchpoint Pack or have played the original Overwatch, I can skip this introduction designed for newcomers and jump right into the action!

Does Overwatch 2 still need a phone number?

Indeed, for some gamers to access Overwatch 2, they need to connect a phone number to their account. However, this requirement is not necessary for those who started playing from June 9, 2021. As stated by Blizzard, the same phone number cannot be used more than once in this context. Voice over IP (VOIP), WiFi, text-only, or internet phone services are not acceptable alternatives. As of November 17, 2022, players with an eligible prepaid phone can register their number on Battle.net and start playing Overwatch 2.

From now on, owners of eligible prepaid phones can register their numbers on their Battle.net account and start enjoying Overwatch 2.
