In Overwatch 2, there’s a challenging, team-based competitive game mode that lets you battle against other squads, with an opportunity to advance your rank during each season. But, before you can access this mode, it needs to be unlocked. Here’s our step-by-step guide on how to get into Competitive Play in Overwatch 2!
How to unlock competitive in Overwatch 2
- Complete the FTUE requirement if applicable
- Confirm your phone number
- Go into the Unranked mode
- Select the Quick Play option
- Complete 50 games of Quick Play
How to unlock ranked in Overwatch 2
To access the Competitive Play mode in Overwatch 2, it is necessary if you are a new player with an account created after October 4, 2022. This initial experience, known as First Time User Experience (FTUE), serves as an introduction to the game. Players who already own the Watchpoint Pack or have previously played the original Overwatch are exempt from going through this FTUE process.
Does Overwatch 2 still need a phone number?
Indeed, to enjoy Overwatch 2, it is essential that your phone number is linked to your account. However, this requirement is not necessary if you started playing before June 9, 2021. As per Blizzard’s policy, one phone number cannot be associated with more than one account.
On November 17, 2022, it’s only possible to play Overwatch 2 if you have a prepaid phone that qualifies for registration on Battle.net, as VOIP, WiFi, text-only, or internet phone services are not functioning.
In response to player feedback and careful consideration of factors hindering new players from joining, Blizzard has decided to alter the SMS Protect Requirements for playing Overwatch 2 starting from today’s update. Now, any individual with a valid prepaid phone can register their number on Battle.net account and start enjoying Overwatch 2 right away.
