Dean DeBlois wrote and directed the live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon. Gerard Butler, known for 300 and the Has Fallen films, returns to voice a character from the original animated movies. He’s joined by new cast members including Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead, Paul), Mason Thames (The Black Phone, For All Mankind), Nico Parker (Dumbo, The Last of Us), Gabriel Howell (Bodies), Julian Dennison (Deadpool 2), Bronwyn James (Wicked), Harry Trevaldwyn (Smothered), and Peter Serafinowicz (Guardians of the Galaxy). The official synopsis for the film is below.
On the harsh island of Berk, Vikings and dragons have been enemies for centuries. But Hiccup (Mason Thames), the son of the Viking chief Stoick the Vast (voiced again by Gerard Butler), is different. He’s a creative young man who doesn’t quite fit in. When Hiccup unexpectedly befriends Toothless, a dangerous Night Fury dragon, he begins to uncover the truth about these creatures, and challenges everything his people believe.
Hiccup faces a world filled with fear and distrust, but he’s not alone. With the help of his determined friend Astrid (played by Nico Parker) and the village’s eccentric blacksmith Gobber (Nick Frost), Hiccup works to bridge the gap between Vikings and dragons. When an old enemy appears, threatening both groups, Hiccup and his dragon Toothless must rely on their bond to create a peaceful future. Together, they’ll push the limits of their worlds and discover what it truly means to be a hero and lead others.
The recent live-action How to Train Your Dragon movie wasn’t as critically acclaimed as the original animated film – it scored 77% on Rotten Tomatoes compared to the original’s 99%. However, audiences loved it, giving it a 97% rating on Popcornmeter and earning it a “Verified Hot” designation. Because of its popularity, a sequel is already being planned.
