An actor in the new movie How to Train Your Dragon 2 says his character is similar to Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean.
Phil Dunster, who gained fame playing Jamie Tartt in the Emmy-winning show Ted Lasso, is the new voice of Eret. Kit Harington, known for Game of Thrones, originally voiced the character in the animated movie.
Actor Fabian Dunster is discussing his role and how he approached playing the character, comparing him to a familiar archetype. In an interview with Cinemablend, Dunster described Eret as having a bold and adventurous personality, noting he has a bit of the same playful energy as Jack Sparrow. He even went further, suggesting Eret is like a ‘dragon-esque’ version of the famous pirate.
He had a daring, adventurous spirit, a bit like Jack Sparrow – imagine Jack Sparrow with a touch of mythical dragon thrown in.
The actor is grateful for the foundation Kit Harington established with the character. He studied how Harington voiced and performed Eret in the animated version to help him prepare for playing the role in the new live-action adaptation.
I really enjoy doing that, and it’s great to have a pre-made template to work with.
Filming for How to Train Your Dragon 2 is already happening, and actor Kit Harington says it’s been a really enjoyable experience.
He described the latest installment as a “joyful set,” and praised director Dean DeBlois, who has overseen all the films in the franchise – both animated and live-action. As Dunster put it, “Dean has truly built this world, and it’s wonderful to be a part of it.”
The show is really uplifting. The director, Dean, created such a believable and immersive world – it feels like everyone within it is truly living there, and it’s wonderful.
Eret was a character in both How to Train Your Dragon and How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. He started as a dragon trapper working for the villain, Drago Bludvist, but later realized Drago was wrong after nearly being killed by him. Eret then joined forces with the dragon riders.
Besides playing Jamie Tartt in Ted Lasso, Brett Goldstein has appeared in films like Murder on the Orient Express and Judy, as well as the TV series Strike Back and The Devil’s Hour. He’s also starring in Steve Carell’s new HBO show, Rooster.
The cast of How to Train Your Dragon 2 features Mason Thames, Nico Parker, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Gabriel Howell, Julian Dennison, Harry Trevaldwyn, Bronwyn James, and Gerard Butler alongside Dunster. Cate Blanchett returns to voice the character Valka Haddocka, a role she previously played in the animated How to Train Your Dragon films.
The 2025 live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon opened at number one in theaters and earned $636 million worldwide. It received positive reviews, earning a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes with critics giving it a 77% score and audiences a remarkable 97%.
The movie How to Train Your Dragon has received three nominations for the Saturn Awards: Best Fantasy Film, Best Visual/Special Effects, and Best Younger Performer (Thames).
Even before the first movie came out, Universal Pictures announced a follow-up film. This sequel will essentially be a remake of How to Train Your Dragon 2, focusing on the story of Hiccup, the dragon rider, and his unexpected reunion with his mother, whom he believed was deceased.
How to Train Your Dragon 2 will be released in theaters on Friday, June 11, 2027.
