How to Train Your Dragon 2 Officially Brings Back Another Fan-Favorite From the Animated Movies

Cate Blanchett, who voiced a character in the animated How to Train Your Dragon movies, is joining Gerard Butler in the upcoming live-action remake of the film. This means another original cast member will be returning for the new version.

Cate Blanchett is set to return as Valka, the Viking warrior, in the next How to Train Your Dragon movie. She first played Valka in How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014), where she was introduced as Hiccup’s long-lost mother and Stoick’s wife, dedicated to rescuing dragons. Blanchett also voiced the character in the 2018 film, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.

For a while, there were plans to have Cate Blanchett reprise her role as Valka in a live-action sequel to How to Train Your Dragon 2. Dean DeBlois, a co-creator and director of the franchise, mentioned in June 2025 that he was actively trying to get her on board, saying he originally wrote the character with Blanchett in mind and would give her the first opportunity to decline the role.

Cate Blanchett is joining the cast alongside returning actors Mason Thames, Nico Parker, Butler, Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James, and Harry Trevaldwyn. Dean DeBlois, the original creator of the film series, is writing, directing, and producing the new live-action sequel.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on June 11, 2027.
