How to read Ben Edlund's The Tick

As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast who’s been around the block more times than I care to count, let me tell you about my affection for The Tick. This indie superhero, born from the creative mind of Ben Edlund, is nothing short of a masterpiece.

As a diehard comics enthusiast, I’d have to say that The Tick, born from the imaginative minds at New England Comics, a once bustling comic book store in Boston, is one of the most extraordinary indie superheroes ever created. This larger-than-life character has been breathed life into not just once, but three times over, each time gracing our screens in unique TV adaptations.

Ben Edlund, who originated the character The Tick, penned and illustrated the initial twelve-issue series. This original set was compiled into what’s known as “The Complete Edlund Omnibus.” Featuring 424 pages, this omnibus is a fantastic collectible for enthusiasts of The Tick.

In this series, some of the most memorable figures from The Tick universe are introduced, such as Arthur, Paul the Samurai, The Man-Eating Cow, and The Terror. Edlund’s creation is filled with entertaining characters and captivating storylines that will continue to be cherished for a long time.

The confusion for new readers is what is known as the Pseudo Edition. Edlund ran The Tick for 12 issues, which were fantastic but did not provide a conclusion to the final story arc. The final story arc concerned The Terror, the villain from Amazon Prime’s The Tick. The Terror was much different in the comic book, leading a team of wacky villains, including the Multi Santa, in a crusade against The Tick.

As an avid fan, I’m thrilled to share that the unfinished run by Edlund gave birth to the Pseudo Edition #13, a captivating extension of the story. Though it wasn’t penned by Edlund himself, Marc Silvia took the reins on scriptwriting, while Mychailo Kazybrid masterfully handled the pencils.

In the wrap-up of the Pseudo Edition, The Tick and Arthur bid farewell as they reverted back to their initial series. The villainous Terror and his squad engaged in a showdown against an army of New York superheroes, among them being Hand Grenade Man.

The Tick is an amazing character, who had an amazing start. The original run was so great in so many ways, and while it wasn’t completed by Ben Edlund, it is certainly worth a read.
