How to play Riftbound, the newest Riot Games Trading Card Game?
As a card-game enthusiast, here’s my take on diving into the world of Riftbound, Riot Games’ upcoming physical trading card game set to drop at the tail end of this year:
“Gearing up for an epic adventure, I’m getting ready to unbox and explore the captivating realm of Riftbound. This is Riot Games’ newest creation – a tactile trading card game that’s about to hit the shelves by year-end. Can’t wait to see what awaits me in this exciting new world!
Riftbound, which was previously called Project K, is set to launch in October 2025. To help players grasp the basics of this tactile card game, Riot Games has created a series of useful tutorials covering topics like deck construction, domains, spells, and many other aspects.
How to play the game?
If you’re new to Trading Card Games (TCGs), let me fill you in on some essentials before we delve into the rules of Riftbound. To play this game, first, prepare a collection of cards, which can be assembled from scratch or started with a pre-built one that you can customize by swapping out cards as you acquire more to create your unique strategy.
The star card in your collection is your champion legend, which forms the base for your deck’s construction. This card dictates the possibilities for your selected champion, who initiates the battle on your side. It also sets the color categories, or domains, of the cards in your deck. Throughout the game, you can deploy more unit champions, cast spells to enhance your team, and even equip gear to give you an edge.
In each match of Riftbound, every participant sets up their own battleground as the starting point. However, once the game commences, any ground can be seized for control. Position your champion and troops strategically to gain dominance, earning a point for each territory taken, plus an extra one at the start of your turn if you maintain control. Achieve eight points (or 11 in team games) to secure victory in Riftbound. Controlling territories isn’t straightforward; if your adversary already holds a battleground, combat ensues. The troops inflict damage based on their strength or might, and the side that survives takes control of the area.
To clarify, these potent cards aren’t without cost. Instead, you’ll need to use special rune cards from a different deck for each card in your own deck. Fortunately, you’ll receive two new runes at the start of every turn. You can utilize them temporarily by rotating them sideways, or spend them entirely by sending them back to your rune deck to play more powerful cards. Rest assured, they will reappear again!
Riftbound Core Rules
As an enthusiastic player of Riftbound, I can’t help but appreciate the depth and detail in The Core Rules. This comprehensive guide, spanning a generous 65 pages, serves as the backbone for our thrilling gaming experiences. It offers meticulous advice on deck construction, game mechanics, turn timing, card resolution, effect stacking, and more – all crucial elements that give shape to the seamless flow of this extraordinary game.
The rules are going to get frequent revisions. Riot Games have announced that they plan to roll out updates for each new set, ensuring the correct functioning of all cards and abilities. Additionally, they might make further adjustments more frequently at first to enhance clarity and completeness.
Just around the corner, you’ll find the Riftbound Tournament Guidelines – a standalone document that outlines event-specific procedures and modifications. It will encompass guidelines for building decks across formats, starting game protocols, and instructions on how to utilize sideboards to adapt your deck between games within a match.
For a relaxed gaming session, these rules are not essential, as they’re not included in the fundamental gameplay experience. However, if you’re interested in competitive play or organizing events, these Tournament Rules will provide valuable insights and solutions for managing games and resolving conflicts. Riot intends to reveal these guidelines along with additional information about Structured Play soon.
