How to have the best Sunday in L.A., according to Sophie Thatcher
As a curious observer, it’s fascinating to delve into the vibrant life of Sophie Thatcher, a woman who seamlessly blends her passions for art, music, and pop culture into her daily routine. Her day is a beautiful symphony of creativity, connection, and self-care, much like one of her favorite shows, “Bojack.
Sophie Thatcher isn’t in L.A. at the moment — but “Yellowjackets” fans will appreciate the reason. She’s in Vancouver filming the new season of the hit Showtime series, in which Thatcher’s character Natalie was revealed last season as the ringleader of a soccer team marooned deep in a mystical wilderness after their plane crashed on their way to a tournament. “I think this season will be very satisfying for viewers,” Thatcher says.
Apart from preparing for her roles, she’s set to appear in two major movie premieres. On November 8, you’ll see her in the A24 religious suspense film “Heretic,” where she takes on the part of a Mormon missionary entangled in a game of chase with Hugh Grant. This role seems tailor-made for her, as Thatcher was brought up Mormon in Illinois and although she no longer practices, both sides of her family remain church members. “I was a bit apprehensive because I didn’t want my mom to be judged since she still attends church,” she says. “Their church is quite liberal, so they might be open-minded. But, that part was nerve-wracking and peculiar.” Additionally, she will star in the upcoming thriller “Companion” as well.
Apart from her other activities, she’s also been working on music, releasing her debut EP titled “Pivot & Scrape.” This five-track collection is a testament to her soulful vocals and her knack for creating emotionally charged pop-rock tunes.
During her breaks, Thatcher prefers to unwind in the places she loves most around Los Angeles. These spots range from her old neighborhood of Silver Lake, to her current residence in Nichols Canyon, which she describes as secluded yet boasting a stunning mid-century cabin-style home, to Sherman Oaks, the birthplace of her musician boyfriend Austin Feinstein. Here’s what an ideal day for Thatcher would look like.
This interview has been lightly edited and condensed for length and clarity.
10:30 a.m.: A little later than usual, I wake up and browse through things online. I’ve always been a deep sleeper, but I’m trying to break this habit. Waking up at 10:30 and scrolling is something I’m working on improving, even though I know it’s not the best for my health. I’ve removed TikTok from my phone because I found myself spending too much time on it, often wasting several hours. Now, I only use Instagram Reels occasionally. And as always, I take care of my lovely cat, Gigi, first thing in the morning.
11:00 a.m.: Leave for a breakfast and a cannabis gummy
11:40 a.m.: Explore the Sherman Oaks Antique Mall for old earrings
12:40 p.m.: I’ll drop by Bristol Farms in West Hollywood for a quick pick-me-up – a maté. I’ve developed quite an affection for energy drinks and find that coffee doesn’t always cut it anymore. So, I’ll grab an energy drink too. I’ll also pick up some sushi there since theirs is quite delicious. To round things off, I’ll get a Chomps beef stick for some added protein.
1:30 PM: Head over to Mount Analog in Silver Lake for some industrial records shopping
3:00 p.m.: Take high tea at the Museum of Jurassic Technology
I’m going all around L.A. and Austin, my boyfriend, is driving, and I got the aux. We’re gonna go to the Museum of Jurassic Technology, and hopefully get a discount, because my friend Emma works there. I’ll take another half of a Camino for the Museum of Jurassic Technology, and then hang out up on the [Russian tea room rooftop] balcony for a while, get some tea and talk. I feel like a good two hours is solid for the museum.
5:00 p.m.: Grab early dinner in the valley
Instead of having dinner later in the evening, we’re planning an early dinner this time. My preferred date spot with Austin is Petit Trois located in Sherman Oaks. For our meal, I’ll be ordering the French onion soup and a glass of Pinot Noir. My boyfriend and I will enjoy our conversation and spend some quality time together. We anticipate staying for approximately an hour and a half. Despite being tired due to my busy day, I won’t take a nap this time.
6:30 p.m.: Head to the music studio for some creative work, but I might struggle if things don’t go smoothly, and there’s always a possibility that I’ll take a break if it doesn’t flow easily. It’s a bit of a toss-up either way.
10:30 PM: Spend the evening in bed with our cat Gigi. On nights when Austin’s away, I tune into “Bojack” to help me drift off, although I think I’ve seen every episode multiple times. It’s my preferred show for falling asleep, yet it can be quite melancholic. I find comfort in it and it lifts my spirits. When we’re together, we watch “The Sopranos.” As I watch, I can’t help but scroll through my phone, checking out Depop, Tumblr, and Instagram Reels. I often buy clothes that I don’t need, and they usually don’t fit. I also find great artwork on Tumblr which I use as references. By this point in the day, it’s been long and I’m beginning to feel tired.
