How to have the best Sunday in L.A., according to Lilly Singh

Lilly Singh is very intentional about how she spends her time, and that includes Sundays. She considers Sunday a crucial day for self-care and recharging, saying, “Sunday is my self-love, reset day.”

The funny actress and online personality started her career as one of the first stars on YouTube in Toronto. In 2015, she moved to Los Angeles, initially living near the La Brea Tar Pits before settling in a house in the San Fernando Valley with her dogs, Scarbro and Soca.

Singh explains that they moved to Los Angeles for the warm weather, and particularly enjoys the heat in the Valley. While others might complain about it being too hot, Singh feels energized by it.

Lilly Singh is known for hosting “A Little Late With Lilly Singh” on NBC and leading the Disney+ show “The Muppets Mayhem.” Her latest project is the film “Doin’ It,” which she co-wrote, produced, and stars in. In the movie, she plays an app creator who gets a surprising job teaching sex education and realizes she has a lot to learn herself. “Doin’ It” hits theaters this Friday.

Southern California boasts beautiful places of worship and peaceful gardens, including Buddhist temples, churches, and synagogues. Here are a few that are especially impressive and worth exploring.

For years, Singh preferred staying up late and sleeping in. But to feel better mentally, she’s changed her routine. Now, during the week, she wakes up at 7 a.m., giving herself two hours to get her mind and body ready for the day.

She’s usually strict with her routine, but she allows herself a break one day a week. “I usually don’t set an alarm on Sundays,” she explains.

This interview has been lightly edited for length and clarity.

I start every day with a consistent mental health routine. I always journal on my patio, and I also make time for stretching and deep breathing exercises – these are things I don’t skip.

Every Sunday morning, after taking care of the dogs, my first stop is the Studio City Farmers Market – and I truly believe it’s the best one around. I’m especially serious about the kefir yogurt; I even have a guy named Orlando who I pre-order from. You really need to text him the night before, or everything will be gone! When Alphonso mangoes are in season, you have to get there super early – around 7 a.m. – to have any chance of getting some.

I walk both ways, so I’m basically a fit legend because, come on, it’s usually really hot.

Every Sunday morning, I buy flowers – usually from the farmers market, but sometimes from Trader Joe’s. I completely refresh my home by arranging them in every room. It takes about an hour to create small bouquets for my desk, kitchen, and bathrooms. It’s a simple way to boost my mood and bring joy throughout the week.

Every Sunday, I treat myself to a solo brunch. It’s my way of having a date with myself – no company allowed!

I always head to the same place for breakfast: Sweet Butter Kitchen. It’s conveniently located on Ventura Boulevard. I usually order the two-egg sunny-side-up breakfast with sourdough toast, and of course, bacon. If I’ve had a busy week or just feel like treating myself, I’ll also get pancakes.

I love the ambience. I’ll take my journal or sometimes I’ll just vibe out and enjoy my own company.

Every third Sunday of the month, I take time to reflect on the past month and see how well I’m progressing towards my yearly goals. This is part of my monthly planning session.

I’m also going to schedule my social life for the next month. I usually host a poker night every month and have dinner with friends almost every Thursday. It’s important to fill up my calendar in Los Angeles – if I don’t stay social, I’ll end up feeling lonely.

I really love my journal. It’s a hardcover one that feels smooth, and I only write in it with a specific Sharpie 1.0 pen. It’s important to me that it has a pen holder and a ribbon bookmark to keep my place. I also prefer lined pages – I don’t like blank journals. Plus, it has a small pocket in the back where I can store papers and keepsakes.

I’ve been a naturally organized person throughout my career. While I wasn’t always this way in school, I definitely prioritize organization now that I’m a working professional.

At 1 p.m., I’m looking forward to enjoying some good food – Sundays are for eating, in my opinion! I’m a big fan of Smorgasburg LA. Having grown up in Toronto with lots of Caribbean and Asian cuisine, I’ve found that Smorgasburg offers some of the best international flavors in Los Angeles.

I usually go there when I’m meeting up with friends or showing visitors around town.

I really value spending time outdoors and connecting with nature. It’s not always easy to do during the week, so whenever I have a chance, I make sure to be outside – whether it’s relaxing on the lawn with my dogs or swimming in the pool.

I don’t want anyone to think I’m a loner, but I usually do solo activities on Sundays. I really enjoy going to the movies, and my favorite place is AMC at Universal CityWalk. I’m a proud AMC Stubs A-List member, and I truly value my membership!

Travel & Experiences

Although Julia Cameron’s book on unlocking creativity came out over three decades ago, it’s recently become very popular again in 2025.

I’m planning to go out for dinner and a movie. I usually try to eat a real meal beforehand, because I’ve definitely had popcorn for dinner before! I’m thinking of going to Kiwami by Katsu-Ya on Ventura – it’s one of my favorite sushi restaurants. It’s a small, cozy place, and they make amazing lychee martinis – I really love them! I go there often enough that the staff knows me and provides really quick service.

You know, one of the biggest reasons I love going to the movies alone is the previews. Seriously, I’m obsessed! My friends always want to chat and I end up missing them. I make a point of getting to the theater super early, just to settle in and watch everything that comes before the main feature. I’ve even shown up ten minutes early before, just to be sure I don’t miss a single trailer!

I enjoy visiting Universal Studios because of the energy from all the tourists. As someone who didn’t grow up in Los Angeles, it’s fun to watch others experience the city. Walking to the theater, you see people decked out in Super Nintendo World and Universal gear, and their excitement is contagious. It’s a good reminder of how special this place is to so many people.

Around 10 p.m., I like to unwind and prepare for the week ahead. I spend time with my dogs, tidy up the house, and make sure everything looks nice – including my plants. I usually relax with a hot tub or sauna session, followed by my nighttime skincare routine.

It’s 11 p.m., and I’m writing one last entry in my journal for the day. I prefer not to watch TV or movies in my bedroom because getting a good night’s sleep is really important to me. I struggle with a little insomnia, so I make an effort to relax before bed. I keep a journal on my nightstand and use it to practice self-compassion.
