How to have the best Sunday in L.A., according to Felix Mallard
Living in L.A., Felix Mallard has come to value the fact that each personality or feel has its own corner of the city – including an “Aussie” one, a testament to his pride as he relocated from Melbourne over seven years ago.
The 27-year-old actor, who portrays Marcus in “Ginny & Georgia” on Netflix, shares that he finds many locations reminiscent of his home. He mentions coastal cities and specific areas like Silver Lake and Echo Park as having a vibe similar to Melbourne, Australia. He explains that these places have an atmosphere of appreciating quality food, coffee, and art – a characteristic shared by many Melburnians.
In the bustling city of Los Angeles, Mallard has been enthralling Gen Z spectators with his intricate acting performances, roles that often strike a chord with young men navigating various societal pressures. Last year, he featured in the romantic drama “Turtles All the Way Down,” an on-screen adaptation of John Green’s young adult novel delving into the intricacies of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Upcoming, he will lead the cast in “Nest,” a movie centering around a young family whose home becomes a battleground against deadly spiders. (“It’s a serene exploration of masculinity and fatherhood, hidden within a thrilling spider horror story,” he notes. “A powerful combination indeed.”)
On Sundays, Mallard finds perfection in Los Angeles with three essential activities: catching waves (it’s non-negotiable), jamming on his guitar, bass, piano, and drums (he’s quite versatile), and embarking on an expedition from West L.A. to the Eastside, all for the thrill of exploration. Here’s a quick run-through.
This interview has been lightly edited for length and clarity.

At 5:30 in the morning, I’d head out for a surfing adventure. Surfing in L.A. can be a bit unpredictable since you need to go where the best waves are. That could mean Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Huntington Beach, Malibu or Ventura. To find the good spots, I check the Surfline app and keep an eye on the seasons – winter brings north swells while summer brings south swells. It’s like playing a game of chance sometimes, but it’s all part of the fun! There’s a great group of Aussies, Kiwis, and Americans who love to surf together, which makes it even sweeter.

8 a.m.: Post-surf Breakfast Bites
After my morning surf, I’ll likely be dressed in a worn-out flannel shirt, track pants, and Birkenstocks, still half asleep. However, it’s essential to grab a breakfast burrito after surfing. In Hermosa Beach, there’s an amazing spot called Brother’s Burritos. They don’t serve the usual large breakfast burritos; instead, they offer two mini ones, which are perfect for a morning meal. Another favorite of mine is Sachi.LA in West L.A., just off the Culver loop. It’s a quirky coffee shop and café with a record store next door, providing an ideal atmosphere after spending the morning in nature. I always make sure to savor the tranquility that follows surfing.

At 9:30 a.m., I’ll be heading home to catch up on this week’s shows. I’ve been absolutely hooked on “Hacks” lately; it’s become an obsession for me. I realize I started watching it quite late, so I’ve had to make up for lost time. Besides that, I’m also enjoying “Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney,” and “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver.” In today’s news landscape, I think it’s essential to get updates in a digestible format. I find John Oliver’s approach to presenting the news with a mix of outrage and absurdity within a fun context quite effective.

Jean Smart, Hannah Einbinder, and Paul W. Downs delve into the grittier aspects of the Emmy-winning comedy’s fourth season, explaining that while it may seem specific to the world of show business, its themes carry universal relevance.
At midday: Attempt to discover the pleasure of cooking
For quite some time, I’ve struggled to view cooking as an expression of love, something I know it can be; I simply haven’t been motivated. However, Jamie Oliver’s cookbooks have been incredibly helpful because he presents recipes in a manner that teaches the basics. In particular, there’s this cookbook called “One-Pan Wonders” with an herby chicken tray bake that seems quite straightforward. You place the vegetables at the bottom of the tray, add plenty of rosemary and lemon, then put the chicken above the tray so its fat drips onto the veggies as it cooks, creating a fantastic flavor. To finish, you sprinkle with some lemon and olive oil. That’s the one I think I can manage. But please note, this recipe is considered easy even by those who have seen it, so I’m not boasting.

1 p.m.: Immerse myself in the rhythm:
Afternoon rolls in, and I find myself stirring from my couch slumber, fueled by a satisfying meal. My destination? A haven for musicians – Exposition Studios in Culver City, a budget-friendly, vibrant, gritty rehearsal space where you can rent instruments and rooms to play as loud and as long as desired for $25 or $30 an hour. Though it’s no longer there, similar studios can be found around town. I’ve had the pleasure of visiting Pirate Studios in West Adams a couple of times, and I seek out any spot that allows me to lose myself in the music at full volume.
I’ve been listening to an Extended Play album filled with my compositions. It carries a raw, emotional vibe, often leaning towards angst. There seems to be a great deal of frustration and sadness intertwined within it. This music explores some of the darker aspects of our inner selves that we all harbor.

4 PM: Car Journey Preparation
As we embark on our eastward journey in L.A., it’s important to anticipate some traffic. To make the most of this time, I’ll be tuning into a podcast. Today, I’ve chosen Louis Theroux. His interview style is fascinating as he skillfully asks questions, allowing his guests to share their true selves or perhaps uncover aspects they may not have intended to reveal. It’s quite impressive how he facilitates these moments and serves as an excellent distraction during our drive.

5 p.m.: Let’s grab some burgers at Burgerlords – they offer a streamlined menu featuring smashburgers, vegan options, and more, along with an assortment of craft beers. The interior has a vintage 1950s diner vibe remodeled for modern times.

7 p.m.: We’ll be unleashed at a punk concert
Afterwards, we’re heading to Zebulon. I adore it! Not many venues offer an indoor-outdoor setup like this one. They have a vast garden where you can step out for some fresh air and then return to the venue for a refreshing change of pace. It’s definitely one of my top choices in L.A. for catching live music.
On my previous visits, I’ve encountered bands like The Spits, who are true punk icons. Another time, I witnessed a band named Spy, backed by Fentanyl, Blood Stained Concrete, and Yard – a Polish hardcore group. Generally, when we attend these events, it’s all about the hardcore music scene. These gigs are always a blast because everyone’s there to let off some steam and energy. The fans are incredibly dedicated, often showing extreme passion for the music.
Midnight: Straight to bed
After my journey back home, I’ll get ready for bed at an earlier hour than usual, around 9 or 10 PM. Despite my desire to portray a healthier image, I must admit that I’m not feeling my best right now.
