How the Yellowjackets Season 3 Finale Solves One of the Show’s Biggest Mysteries

Since the debut of Yellowjackets in November 2021, viewers have felt a mix of excitement and apprehension about discovering the identity of the Antler Queen and her band of masked hunters, who were seen chasing and consuming someone in the pilot’s opening scene.

Three years on, the Season 3 finale at last disclosed the true identity of the character known as “the pit girl.” It’s been quite a trek to reach this moment for the teenage girls stranded in the wilderness. So far, they managed to survive without eating any living teammate (Farewell Jackie), instead feasting on their male counterparts – Javi and Coach Ben. However, Travis was the only one who escaped unscathed (and we already know he returns home).

Over the last several episodes, some of the Yellowjackets have slipped further into a tumultuous mental state, which could be due to group hallucinations or something otherworldly. In Episode 8, despite being given an opportunity for safe passage by wilderness guide Kodiak (Joel McHale), who happened upon them while leading a pair of hikers studying frogs, Lottie (Courtney Eaton), Taissa (Jasmin Savoy Brown), and Shauna (Sophie Nélisse) compelled the entire group to stay at camp. Later, when a faction led by Natalie (Sophie Thatcher) tried to break away in Episode 9, it culminated in hiker Hannah (Ashley Sutton) fatally stabbing Kodi through the eye to escape Shauna’s anger.

At the final stage, everything builds up to Shauna, our latest team leader, urging the girls to consent for another hunt. The target of this hunt will be determined randomly through drawing a card.

Who is pit girl?

Previously during the farming season, Nia Sondaya’s character, Akilah, had a disturbing premonition of discovering all her livestock deceased. In the final episode, this ominous dream seemed to materialize as Akilah stumbled upon the carcasses of the animals she nurtured with care. But it turns out that Akilah herself was responsible for their deaths, having killed them to persuade the other girls that they had to hunt in order to satisfy the wilderness’s demands.

Following Lottie’s and Shauna’s persuasion, the Yellowjackets indeed choose to sacrifice one of their group as a means of appeasing the wilderness and continuing an ominous custom. A deck of cards will determine their unfortunate victim. Tai and Van (played by Liv Hewson) attempt to manipulate the card draw in favor of newcomer Hannah, but with the queen of hearts as the deadly card. However, Shauna notices their scheme and alters the sequence of the circle. Instead, it’s Mari (Alexa Barajas) who draws the lethal card. Shauna then places Jackie’s heart pendant around Mari’s neck and starts counting down.

The remaining girls put on their furs and homemade masks, then embarked on the hunt. Once Mari managed to get some space between them, she tried not to be seen by removing her vibrant jacket and pants (an action that also caused her to lose her shoes), leaving her dressed in just a nightgown – a garment that felt oddly familiar to her; it was the same outfit the pit girl wore during the pilot episode when she perished.

It’s clear that not everyone desires Mari to be apprehended. Character Gen (played by Vanessa Prasad) makes an effort to divert Taissa from the chase, offering her friend a more promising chance at staying alive. However, fate doesn’t seem to favor Mari, as she finds herself back in the same pit where she hurt her knee earlier this season. But this time, the pit isn’t just a hole – it has been fortified with sharpened stakes (placed there by Travis in a failed attempt to kill Lottie during the previous episode). Unfortunately, Mari falls into these deadly traps and succumbs to her injuries.

In the pilot, we first get a peek at the festive gathering, and later, it unfolds as Shauna, adorned in her Antler Queen attire (now known to have been demanding it be embellished with strands of Mari’s hair), takes charge of the ritual.

What this means for Yellowjackets

We’ve discovered the identity of the mysterious pit girl, but the finale unveils that there’s more to this tale. Thankfully, the hikers who encountered the Yellowjackets had a damaged satellite phone with them. The resourceful trio of Misty (Samantha Hanratty), Natalie, and Van managed to fix it using a component from their plane’s wreckage (which Misty deliberately destroyed in Season 1).

In the course of their pursuit, Natalie secretly teams up with Hannah, Misty, and Van as they aim to evade a growing suspicious Shauna. Their objective is to reach someone who might offer them assistance. Meanwhile, as the others pursue Mari, Natalie discreetly departs from camp with a fixed phone.

Following the banquet, Shauna becomes suspicious as Natalie remains unusually quiet. Ripping off Natalie’s mask reveals it’s not Natalie, but Hannah instead. In an unexpected turn of events, Natalie managed to escape and has been trekking up a snow-covered mountain in a frantic attempt to find cell service. The final scene of the series finale depicts Natalie establishing contact with an enigmatic voice over the radio, who responds, “Yes, I can hear you.

In my humble opinion, Shauna won’t simply return home; her fury over being deceived makes the journey ahead a formidable challenge. It’s not going to be a leisurely stroll, that much is clear.
