For the past twenty years, since finishing his role on ER, actor Noah Wyle has been searching for the same feeling of camaraderie and dedication he experienced while working on the show with his friend, George Clooney.
George Clooney, now 64, became a major Hollywood star, winning awards and starring in blockbuster movies. Meanwhile, Noah Wyle, 54, found it harder to achieve the same level of success, primarily working in independent films and moderately popular TV shows, including a long run of 11 years on the show ER.
At least that was until The Pitt.
Wyle is known for his role in the popular HBO Max medical drama, where he plays Dr. Michael ‘Robby’ Robinavitch, a seasoned and tired doctor at the made-up Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. Every episode focuses on the challenges faced during a single, hectic hour at the hospital.
The show debuted in January 2025, and a second season followed in 2026. It quickly gained recognition, culminating in Wyle winning a Golden Globe earlier this year and another award at the Actor Awards on March 1st.
Okay, so everyone’s buzzing about how great he seems right now, but honestly, it sounds like things aren’t as perfect as they appear. I’m hearing whispers of some old issues resurfacing – apparently, a former colleague brought up claims of bullying from his ER days. And to add to that, there’s a lawsuit alleging his current show is a bit too similar to a previous hit. It’s a reminder that even when someone looks like they’re on top of the world, there can be hidden challenges going on behind the scenes.
Concerns arose last summer when Shabana Azeez, the actress who plays Dr. Victoria Javadi, shared that her co-star Wyle repeatedly mispronounced her name during interviews.
‘He’s called me Shabeena Azeez, which is not my name,’ she said at an event for the show.
She also seemed to publicly question his expertise in an interview with KTLA in January. The interviewer had asked if their experience on the show qualified them to give medical advice, and her response implied disagreement with his abilities.
Don’t let actors pretend to be something they’re not. Noah, like all actors, plays a role – he can’t actually save lives. They aren’t trained medical professionals; actors can’t perform procedures like intubation, as far as I’m concerned.
It’s understandable that these recent comments have brought attention back to stories about Noah Wyle’s behavior on the set of ER. Apparently, he was known for being challenging to work with, and his co-stars – Goran Višnjić, Erik Palladino, Michael Michele, and Kellie Martin – were most affected by his difficult attitude.
‘When [Višnjić] came on to the show, I had a chip on my shoulder. I had a chip on my shoulder with anybody that came on that show,’ he told The Hollywood Reporter in 2019, in which he revealed he has since apologized to everyone for being harsh.
Over the years, I’ve made a point of apologizing to everyone I may have treated unfairly when I was younger. We were a tough group, and I especially put a lot of pressure on new cast members like Erik Palladino and Michael Michele. I always felt everyone needed to prove themselves, and I particularly feel bad about how I treated Kellie Martin – I really owe her an apology.
Right now, the lawsuit claiming he was involved in making a sequel to the medical show without permission is a bigger concern than old accusations about his past behavior.
In August 2024, the estate of Michael Crichton, the creator of ER—represented by Roadrunner JMTC—filed a lawsuit against actors Noah Wyle and Warner Bros. Television, alleging they violated their contract, acted in bad faith, and intentionally disrupted business agreements.
According to documents obtained by the Daily Mail, Roadrunner JMTC says they were excluded from a possible agreement following unsuccessful talks to revive ‘ER.’ Additionally, Sherri Crichton, the widow of the show’s creator, claims that ‘The Pitt’ is largely the same show as the original, just with minor alterations.
Because WBTV wouldn’t negotiate, the plaintiff’s lawyers told WBTV they would protect their existing rights, meaning the planned revival of ‘ER’ couldn’t move forward, according to the court document.
This development frightened both the showrunner, John Wells, and the actor David Wyle, so they desperately contacted Sherri, hoping to appeal to her emotions and convince her to approve the reboot.
Wyle told Sherri he strongly supported her efforts to safeguard Crichton’s work and credit as the author, emphasizing that his only goal was to honor Michael, for whom he had lasting appreciation.
It was also claimed that Wyle stated Scott Gemmill, the actor, producer, and showrunner, had been quietly working on a reboot of ‘ER’ well before Wells contacted Sherri.
According to the documents, Wyle initially contacted Wells in February 2020 with a concept for a short-run series continuing the story of ER. Similar to the original, the revival would depict the ongoing struggles of city hospitals, highlighting how the COVID-19 pandemic, drug addiction, and widespread homelessness were damaging the healthcare system.
Warner Bros. has disputed the accusations, maintaining that “The Pitt” is an original creation and not based on anyone else’s work. They also stated that the lawsuit threatens artistic freedom. However, a judge has decided the case can move forward, denying Warner Bros.’ and the defendant’s attempt to have it dismissed.
As a huge fan, I was really following the legal stuff closely. Last October, Warner Bros. TV, along with the show’s star, Noah Wyle, and the main creative force, John Wells, decided to appeal a previous ruling in the California Court of Appeal. It felt like everyone involved was determined to fight for what they believed in.
The legal document stated there was no proof that ‘The Pitt’ was created using or copying elements from ‘ER’. Therefore, it wasn’t considered a ‘derivative’ work, even if the usual rules for determining ‘derivative works’ didn’t apply.
Roadrunner JMTC responded to these claims by filing a brief with the Appellate Court on February 18th, which was then reviewed by the Daily Mail. The document reveals they continue to argue the new show is similar to the original, specifically pointing out that the character played by Wyle is essentially the same, just 15 years older.
According to Michael Crichton’s estate, Dr. Robby is simply Dr. Carter with a new name and aged 15 years. He’s played by the same actor, maintains the same personality, and serves the same purpose in the story.
Both ‘ER’ and ‘The Pitt’ essentially tell the same story – they’re the same hospital drama with identical core elements like the plot, overall message, how characters speak, the general feeling, where it takes place, how quickly it moves, and the order of events. Furthermore, actor Goran Visnjic plays the same type of character – an emergency room doctor – in both shows, simply under a different name.
The ongoing lawsuit could cost the award-winner financially.
Following his departure from the TV show ER in 2005 to focus on his family, Wyle openly discussed experiencing financial hardship and a period of significant depression.
Oh my gosh, he was making bank back then! Seriously, by 2001, he was raking in around nine million dollars per season! And even after he left, they had to bring him back! He did a few guest spots in season twelve, and then, get this, a whole five-episode storyline in the final season – season fifteen! It was amazing, even though it ended in April 2009. I was devastated when it was over, but at least we got those extra moments with him!
While George Clooney left ER in 1999 and went on to huge success with endorsements like Nespresso and hit movies such as Ocean’s, Gravity, and The Descendants, Mary McDonnell’s career after ER didn’t achieve the same level of prominence.
He mostly worked on low-rated TV movies, commercials for video games, and shows that didn’t become popular like ER.
When the COVID pandemic hit, Wyle found himself in a difficult financial situation and almost had to sell his house in Santa Ynez for $6.5 million. He put it up for sale in March 2020 for $6,495,000, but removed the listing after just three months.
He recently told The New York Times that he had even considered selling his valuable baseball card collection.
However, fans were unaware that he was also privately struggling with the financial difficulties caused by his divorce, as revealed exclusively by the Daily Mail.
Tracy Warbin, Wyle’s first wife, filed for divorce in June 2010 after 11 years together, citing differences that couldn’t be resolved. This followed reports in The National Enquirer about a relationship between Wyle and actress Gina Gershon after they had separated.
While the rumored romance has never been officially acknowledged, Gershon recently told the Daily Mail that she deliberately omitted details about past relationships and affairs from her new memoir, AlphaPussy.
When asked by the Daily Mail why she didn’t mention Wyle in her memoir, she explained that she generally avoids writing about past relationships. She said the book focuses on other things entirely.
The actress expressed her sincere happiness for Wyle and his success with ‘The Pitt,’ adding that he truly deserves it. She also shared that he’s a genuinely good person.
Wyle has two children from his first marriage: Owen, 23, and Auden, 20. He and his current wife, Sara Wells, whom he married in 2014, also have a daughter together named Frances, who is 10 years old.
Wyle’s divorce was finalized in December 2010, and a court order stipulated that his former spouse would receive almost $214,000.
As a longtime follower, it’s really disheartening to learn, through court documents, that Wyle didn’t follow through on his commitments. He apparently stopped providing the agreed-upon financial support for his child and ex-spouse after their separation, which is incredibly upsetting.
In 2016, Warbin told the court that Wyle hadn’t paid her $233,328 in child support and $479,346 in spousal support. She asked the court to enforce the original agreement and include interest dating back to December 31, 2014.
She claimed that his income for the year of 2014 totaled over $3 million.
Court records from 2018 show he hadn’t paid his child support for 2016 and 2017. He told the court she was owed money for those years, but they both preferred to resolve issues privately without court intervention, according to the documents.
By March 1, 2019, both sides, with help from their lawyers and accountants if they choose, will meet to try and agree on how much the Respondent owes the Petitioner for additional spousal and child support for 2016 and 2017.
According to a document filed in January 2020, Wyle still owed child support from 2018. Both parties hired forensic accountants to calculate the exact amount owed for that year.
I’ve been following this case for a while, and honestly, the exact amount he paid his ex-wife has never been fully public. But thankfully, it seems to be completely settled now – there haven’t been any new court documents filed in over six years, which is a really good sign.
The Daily Mail contacted lawyers for both sides of the lawsuit, as well as Noah Wyle’s representative, for a statement.
