How ‘The Big Bang Theory’ Connected Two Star Wars Legends Who Never Met
The actors from the initial Star Wars trilogy are some of the most famous faces in cinema. Names like Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, James Earl Jones, and others became common household terms. It’s hard to envision any member of this team not knowing a great deal about their fellow cast members. However, it’s intriguing to consider that two of these actors never crossed paths during filming, and they didn’t meet each other for the first time until close to 40 years later.
It’s hard to imagine, but it’s true for Carrie Fisher and James Earl Jones: The voice behind Darth Vader recorded his lines independently from the rest of the Star Wars cast, meaning he never met his on-screen daughter during filming. Remarkably, they didn’t meet until 2014 when they both appeared together in an episode of The Big Bang Theory. Given that TBBT was famous for its sci-fi guest stars, it seems fitting that Fisher and Jones finally crossed paths there. However, one might wonder how they never encountered each other in the four decades leading up to their guest appearances on TBBT. And did Jones interact with any other cast members during this time? Let’s explore.
The Iconic ‘Star Wars’ Co-Stars
If you’ve been keeping up with popular culture since 1977, it’s common knowledge about the Star Wars cast and characters. Carrie Fisher portrayed Princess Leia, while James Earl Jones supplied Darth Vader’s voice (with David Prowse donning the costume). It might surprise you to learn that they never actually met. However, as we delve deeper into the production details, it starts making more sense. In reality, Jones did not physically appear on the set of the original trilogy; instead, he dubbed over Prowse’s lines in a recording studio after filming had wrapped up. Additionally, Vader and Leia didn’t share many scenes compared to other original cast members.
This implies that Fisher and Jones never crossed paths in any public events such as press conferences, award functions, or film sets. Contrary to popular belief about Hollywood’s tight-knit community, it is not surprising that celebrities may not meet each other often. However, one would expect co-stars from the same movie to run into each other unexpectedly at least once. Interestingly, Jones did interact with Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford in real life. He acted alongside Ford in “Patriot Games” (1992), though it’s unclear if that was their first encounter. Hamill has posted pictures with Jones on social media dating back to the ’80s.
In an unexpected yet foreseeable location, Jones and Fisher eventually encountered each other. They made an appearance together in the “The Convention Conundrum” episode of The Big Bang Theory, which aired in January 2014.
A ‘Big Bang Theory’ Meeting 37 Years Later
This story revolves around Leonard, Sheldon, Raj, and Howard’s efforts to acquire tickets for the San Diego Comic-Con that year. However, when they fail to get any, Leonard, Raj, and Howard consider buying from a reseller, which initially seems like a good idea, but soon terrifies them, causing them to back out. In contrast, Sheldon locates James Earl Jones at a nearby restaurant and has the unique experience of meeting him. To his surprise, Jones is friendly towards Sheldon, unlike many other celebrity guests.
With enthusiasm, Jones responds to Sheldon’s inquiries about Star Wars and his private life. Subsequently, they engaged in a range of activities throughout the evening, such as visiting an ice cream shop, enjoying a Ferris wheel ride, performing karaoke, relaxing in a sauna, and even sharing that experience together. By night’s end, it appears that Sheldon grows weary of Jones’ behavior, but luckily for him, the voice of Darth Vader extends an invitation to Sheldon and their companions as his guests to Comic Con.
In the course of an evening, Jones and Sheldon decided to play a game of hide-and-seek known as “ding-dong-ditch” at Carrie Fisher’s residence. They rang the bell and quickly fled. Upon appearing outside with a baseball bat, Fisher immediately recognized Jones. This encounter marked their first meeting, which was unexpected by the production team. As portrayed in the episode, both actors seemed to be having a great time. Jones demonstrated his comedic skills and embraced the role of the “die-hard Star Wars fan”. Although Fisher’s scene was brief, her excitement was palpable through her single line. Interestingly, Mark Hamill, who plays Sheldon and Amy’s wedding officiant in the eleventh season finale, was also one of their co-stars during this interaction. Executive producer Steve Molaro recalled that Fisher warmly greeted Jones with “Dad!” when they met on set, a fact unknown to them at the time.
It’s quite possible that Carrie Fisher and James Earl Jones, both iconic figures in the entertainment industry, only met once or barely met at all, as their lives overlapped for a relatively short period before Fisher’s untimely demise in 2016. Subsequently, Jones passed away in 2024. Given that they weren’t connected through “The Big Bang Theory,” it’s intriguing to consider if these two stars would have ever crossed paths otherwise. Star Wars enthusiasts who haven’t witnessed their first on-screen encounter as a “father and daughter” should definitely add this episode to their watchlist.
