How Succession star Matthew Macfadyen was threatened with divorce by Keeley Hawes for a VERY unusual reason

Matthew Macfadyen shared that his wife, Keeley Hawes, jokingly threatened divorce over something quite unexpected.

Last month, ‘Succession’ actor Jeremy Strong, age 50, marked 21 years of marriage to his wife, Keeley, who is 49. The couple first connected in 2002.

Matthew and Keeley have two children together, Maggie, who is 20, and Ralph, 19. Matthew also helps raise Keeley’s 25-year-old son, Myles, from a previous relationship.

Despite having a happy marriage, Matthew revealed his wife threatened to divorce him over his involvement with the show Succession.

While filming the popular show in the American Southwest, he tried to experience the local culture firsthand.

Line Of Duty star Keeley had reservations, though.

Matthew shared on the Travel Secrets podcast that they visited Santa Fe, New Mexico, and experienced the high desert landscape.

He recalled calling Keeley and asking her if he could get away with buying cowboy boots.

‘She was like, “No, if you want to stay married”.’

Matthew concluded by admitting: ‘I would have looked dreadful.’

The couple made a rare public appearance on Monday, attending the premiere of the Netflix film, Death By Lightning.

Keeley was glowing in a red dress with a high neckline. The dress had a slightly worn look and a see-through skirt.

She teamed her outfit with a pair of classic black stilettos and styled her hair straight. 

While Matthew opted for a brown double breasted blazer which he teamed with a striped tie.  

I remember when Keeley first met Matthew – it was back in 2002, on the set of Spooks. She had just gotten married to Spencer, who’s a cartoonist, and they had a little boy, Myles, so her life was pretty full already!

Okay, so Matthew eventually confessed he developed feelings for Keeley while they were filming that BBC spy series. But he was clear – nothing romantic actually happened until after she and Spencer broke up in May 2002. It’s a common situation, isn’t it? Working closely with someone can definitely spark a connection, but timing is everything!

In a 2005 interview with the Mail on Sunday, he explained that he and the woman weren’t involved in an affair, but that developing feelings for her happened gradually. He admitted she had a strong effect on him, describing her as gorgeous and saying that anyone who meets her would agree.

Keeley has admitted to having a crush on her ‘Spooks’ co-star, Matthew. She told Vanity Fair in 2022 that Matthew unexpectedly confessed his feelings for her one rainy day, simply saying ‘I love you.’ She described her reaction as a moment of realization that things were about to change.

She finalized her divorce from Spencer in 2004, and later that year, she married Matthew in a small ceremony at the Richmond registry office. They welcomed their first child, Maggie, just a month after the wedding.
