Michael Mando is returning to the role of Mac Gargan, also known as The Scorpion, in the new film Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Fans have been waiting nine years for this character to reappear, ever since a brief hint at his arrival after the credits of Spider-Man: Homecoming. Many believed this storyline had been dropped, but now The Scorpion is back as one of Spider-Man’s biggest threats.
Similar to characters like Vulture and Mysterio, the MCU’s version of Scorpion takes inspiration from the original Marvel comics but also adds its own unique elements. Let’s compare Scorpion’s history and costume in Spider-Man: Brand New Day to both the comic books and the animated series Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. The trailer may have hinted at how Scorpion will be featured in Spider-Man: Brand New Day and how the MCU is reimagining his well-known origin story.
Scorpion’s Backstory in the Comics and MCU, Explained

A major difference between the comic book and movie versions of Scorpion lies in his origin story. In the comics, Mac Gargan starts as a detective hired by J. Jonah Jameson to investigate Peter Parker and uncover how he got pictures of Spider-Man. Jameson then uses Gargan as a test subject for a high-tech scorpion-themed suit, designed to fight Spider-Man. The process ultimately drives Gargan insane, transforming him into one of Spider-Man’s enemies.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Mac Gargan isn’t a private investigator like in some versions of the character. Instead, he’s a dangerous gangster with a scorpion tattoo on his neck. This take on Gargan is based on a criminal named Maximus Gargan who first appeared in the Ultimate Comics Spider-Man comic book in 2012. In Spider-Man: Homecoming, Gargan, known as “The Gargan Tail” – a nod to his future Scorpion costume – is a key customer for weapons made by Adrian Toomes, The Vulture. After Spider-Man captures him on the Staten Island Ferry, Gargan is shown in prison, seeking revenge on Spider-Man and asking Toomes if he knows the hero’s identity. A different version of the character also appears in the animated Disney+ series Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.
This Disney+ animated series is set in a world similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but with some important changes. The biggest difference is that Norman Osborn, instead of Tony Stark, finds and recruits Peter Parker in 2016. In the first season of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Mac Gargan, also known as Scorpion, is a repeating villain. This version of Scorpion, modeled after actor Michael Mando, leads a gang called the Scorpions in a conflict with the 100 First Street Gang.
Differences in Scorpion’s Costumes Between Comics, Animation, and ‘Brand New Day’

The trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day gives us a quick glimpse of Mac Gargan’s Scorpion costume. It seems to be staying true to the armored design from the comic books. However, the new costume has a more modern, technological feel compared to the comic version, which is generally sleeker. Also, while the comic book Scorpion is brightly green, the costume in the trailer appears to be a darker, more subdued shade of green. The trailer shows Scorpion without a mask, but it’s possible the suit has a retractable one.
Comparing the Scorpion’s appearance in Brand New Day to the version in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is noteworthy. In this iteration, Doctor Otto Octavius provides the suit, keeping the classic bright green color. The design includes a full face mask with an eye visor reminiscent of the original Steve Ditko artwork, but with updated orange lenses. A protective barrier covers the mouth, mirroring how it was often depicted beneath the mask. Unlike the fully covered suits in the comics and the MCU, this version features a sleeveless harness connecting the tail, leaving Gargan’s arms and legs visible.
The MCU’s Scorpion Origin Story Possibly Revealed
The Scorpion suit shown in the Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer looks rough and pieced together, much like the suits worn by Vulture and Shocker in Spider-Man: Homecoming. This implies that Mac Gargan is using a tail originally created by Adrian Toomes, and likely recovered by Damage Control after the events of Homecoming. It seems Gargan will be equipped with the Scorpion armor to pursue Spider-Man, possibly as a nod to his origins in the comics.

Here’s a surprising change: instead of J. Jonah Jameson providing Scorpion’s suit, it’s the Department of Damage Control. They might then try to capture Spider-Man, especially after he teams up with the enigmatic character played by Sadie Sink. This would be a cool take on Scorpion’s comic book beginnings – being equipped by an enemy to hunt Spider-Man – and it echoes the Civil War comics, where those in favor of superhero registration used villains to track down heroes who disagreed. In fact, Civil War #5 featured a scene where two villains attacked Spider-Man, but The Punisher actually ended up saving him. Scorpion is also set to appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
If Scorpion isn’t using the suit made by Vulture, it means someone else is providing Mac Gargan with his equipment. This could be Tombstone, a villain appearing in Spider-Man: Brand New Day and played by Marvin Jones III (Krondon), or perhaps the new leader of The Hand. Regardless of who’s supplying the suit, Spider-Man is about to face a tough battle against one of his deadliest enemies.
