How Scrubs Revival Will Treat Season 9 As Part Of Its Continuity Explained By Zach Braff

The new season of Scrubs has revealed how it will address a particularly controversial storyline from the original series.

Created by Bill Lawrence, Scrubs was a TV show that aired on NBC and ABC from 2001 to 2010. It followed the lives of young doctors – both at work and personally – at Sacred Heart Hospital. Zach Braff played J.D., the main character and narrator, with Donald Faison as Christopher Turk and Sarah Chalke as Elliot Reid.

Zach Braff recently told CinemaBlend that the new series will essentially be a reboot, ignoring season 9 of the original Scrubs. They’re treating season 8 as the true finale and considering season 9 a separate spin-off, which, according to Braff, is what Bill Lawrence always intended. You can find Braff’s full explanation below.

We’re essentially rebooting the show and starting with a fresh Season 1. While it features the same beloved characters, it feels like a completely new series. The creator, Bill Lawrence, always felt the original Season 9 was different enough to be considered a spin-off – he even wished he’d titled it ‘Scrubs: Med School’.

The story continues directly after the events of seasons one through eight. If you recall the images J.D. saw at the end of the finale, those weren’t necessarily real memories – they were his hopes for the future. Our new story begins years later, picking up with those wishes as a starting point.

The eighth season of Scrubs was originally intended as the show’s finale, bringing J.D.’s journey and the stories of the main characters to a close. But the network asked for a ninth season, so the creators tried a new approach, focusing on a fresh group of medical students at Sacred Heart. Because of this shift in characters and format, the ninth season felt more like a spin-off than a continuation of the original series.

Fans disliked season 9 because it didn’t feel like the Scrubs they loved. It lacked the qualities that made the show successful, and many felt it was as if the series had already concluded. The season also didn’t give proper closure to the original characters; J.D. quickly moved away from Sacred Heart, and Turk and Carla had limited screen time in the latter half.

The new season will pick up the story right after the end of season 8, instead of including events from season 9. The season 8 finale showed J.D. walking down a hospital hallway, imagining his future – a successful career, close friends, and a happy family – and many fans consider that to be the perfect ending to the show.

The original actors are returning for the new series, which takes place years after the original and delves into what really happened in J.D.’s life, beyond the daydreams we saw before. The trailer shows J.D., Turk, and Elliot back at the hospital, reconnecting with both familiar faces like Dr. Cox (John C. McGinley) and Carla Espinosa (Judy Reyes), and meeting new colleagues.

The new series offers a chance to recapture the magic of Scrubs and remind viewers what they loved about the original. It appears the revival aims to give fans the continuation they’ve wanted, while avoiding the issues that divided them with the original ending.

Scrubs premieres on ABC on Wednesday, February 25, at 8 p.m. ET.
