How Ryan Reynolds paid tribute to Deadpool & Wolverine co-star Rob Delaney and his two-year-old son Henry who died of brain cancer
As I read through this heartfelt tribute by Ryan Reynolds to Rob Delaney, I can’t help but be moved by their shared journey of grief and resilience. It’s a poignant reminder that humor, though it may seem an odd companion to sorrow, often serves as a lifeline in the darkest of times.
In a recent conversation, Ryan Reynolds talked about the homage he made to Rob Delaney’s deceased son Henry, within the context of Deadpool and Wolverine.
On a Monday, Reynolds, aged 47, shared on Instagram about the heartfelt tribute they paid to Delaney’s young son, who sadly passed away at the tender age of two – mere months following the wrap-up of Deadpool 2 filming.
He shared several photos of him and Delaney, 47, on set while filming Deadpool & Wolverine and included an inset of Delaney’s memoir A Heart That Works, which was released in 2022.
As a die-hard admirer, I couldn’t help but be touched by the heartfelt tribute and profound caption that Reynolds posted. In it, he showered praise on his co-star who once again stepped into the shoes of Peter Wisdom, a cherished comrade of Deadpool, aka Wade Wilson, in our beloved franchise.
Initially, Delaney portrayed the character in Deadpool 2, a film that premiered in 2018, approximately at the same time when his son Henry, who had been fighting brain cancer, passed away.
In the films featuring Deadpool and Wolverine, Reynolds highlighted an unusual credit titled ‘In Honor of Henry Delaney.’
In a post, Reynolds expressed that Rob Delaney introduced PeterPool, formerly known as Sugarbear, to us in such a way that they became endearing, and effortlessly transformed the contemporary concept of the moose-knuckle – demonstrating it can be both stylish and functional.
Following the release of the latest blockbuster that introduced the idea of anchor beings within the Marvel Multiverse, he labeled his fellow actor as a ‘key figure’, someone who is crucial for the continuation and preservation of a universe.
‘And if theories are correct, he may be the new Anchor Being,’ Reynolds wrote.
‘There’s more to Rob Delaney than some realize,’ he continued. ‘He’s one of the most subversively funny people I know.
“He went on to describe the New York Times bestselling author as being both charmingly sharp-witted and emotionally exposed,” he said further.
If you paid attention during the end credits of Deadpool and Wolverine, you might have spotted a credit reading, “For Henry Delaney.” It turns out that Henry is Rob’s son. Sadly, Rob lost his young boy to a brain tumor in 2018, just as we wrapped up working on Deadpool 2.
He expressed his regret about not incorporating a tribute for Delaney’s deceased son in the second Deadpool film. Now, he’s paying his respects to Henry instead.
He lamented that he hadn’t added a tribute to Henry during the end credits of DP2, as it was something he had regrettably overlooked. (He wrote this.)
‘If there’s a bright side, even more people are seeing Henry’s name in the credits of Deadpool & Wolverine,’ he added in his heartfelt and tearjerking caption. ‘And at long last, father and son are sharing the same screen.’
Later on, Reynolds expressed his appreciation for the way Catastrophe’s lead actor deals with grief, particularly in his memoirs.
In his writing, it was stated that Rob possesses a strikingly realistic viewpoint on unthinkable sorrow. Through his book, A HEART THAT WORKS, he offers an uncensored, passionate, loving, melancholic, and even humorous (yes, HUMOROUS) examination of grief. This remarkable piece of literature delves into the vibrant spectrum of emotions that Henry’s passing unveiled.
At the end of the lengthy note, he gushed about being honored to know and work with Delaney.
1. It’s fortunate for me to be acquainted with Rob, and it’s fortunate that I have friends who are ready to take risks to help others not feel so lonely.
Back in January 2018, Delaney, the father of four boys with his spouse Leah Delaney, tragically lost their son Henry due to complications arising from a brain tumor.
His late son was diagnosed with cancer two years earlier.
In 2022, Delaney wrote and published a memoir dedicated to Henry.
In A Heart That Works, he opened up about how he and his family navigated grief after the devastating loss of his young son.
