How One Bad Decision Derailed a Legendary TV Show’s Potential

If Prison Break had concluded after its brilliant first season, it could have been considered one of the greatest TV series of all time. However, the show ran for an additional four seasons filled with questionable content, despite originally being conceived as a 14-episode miniseries by Paul Scheuring (as reported by The Age) due to Fox’s doubts about the longevity of a show based on a single mission.

Given the success of serial dramas such as “24” and “Lost”, Fox determined that “Prison Break” could potentially continue as an ongoing series, regardless of whether the storyline necessitated it. It’s not unusual for a program initially conceived as a miniseries to be renewed for another season when network executives start seeing dollar signs instead of episodes.

Initially, shows like “Stranger Things”, “Big Little Lies”, “Altered Carbon”, and “The Flight Attendant” were intended as standalone series, but they were later renewed for season 2. On the other hand, “Beef” and “The White Lotus” were originally planned as miniseries, but have since been developed into anthology shows. However, extending “Prison Break” into a five-season narrative, which felt forced, tarnished what could have been a true masterpiece.

Prison Break Should Have Never Continued Past Season 1

It Told A Perfectly Self-Contained Story

In the pilot of Prison Break, the story introduces an intriguing scenario. Michael Scofield, a structural engineer, intentionally enters Fox River State Penitentiary, where he has the prison’s layout tattooed on his body. His goal is to aid his falsely imprisoned brother in breaking out. By the second-to-last episode of season 1, both brothers manage their daring escape, accompanied by six other prisoners.

It wasn’t necessary to prolong the tale any further, as it was already concluded at that point. The initial part of the series laid the groundwork for Michael’s objective of freeing Lincoln from prison, and the climax of the season achieved this by having them escape via a tunnel. However, Prison Break persisted for an additional four seasons beyond when it had effectively wrapped up its narrative.

Prison Break’s Other Seasons Only Tarnished The Show’s Legacy

The Storylines Got Really Contrived

In the second installment of “Prison Break,” there appeared to be a promise of more intriguing narratives yet to unfold. The fact that the Fox River Eight had successfully broken out didn’t guarantee their freedom. Instead, season 2 transformed the series into an echo of “The Fugitive,” as the escapees found themselves in hiding and evading the relentless pursuit of law enforcement agents seeking them out.

As time passed, the plotlines of Prison Break grew increasingly implausible, focusing more and more on the underhanded activities of “The Company.” In season 3, Michael found himself in a Panamanian prison, devising another escape plan. Season 4 took a turn for the extraordinary, transforming into an action-packed series reminiscent of Fast & Furious, as the Fox River Eight were employed by Homeland Security as mercenaries.
