Isaac Hempstead Wright, known for his role in Game of Thrones, has decided to pursue a career in neuroscience after completing his studies in the field, marking a significant shift from acting.
The 26-year-old actor announced his marriage to his longtime girlfriend on Monday. While starring in the HBO show that ended in 2019 with a controversial finale, he’d also spoken about his interest in particle physics.
Isaac Hempstead Wright played Bran Stark throughout all eight seasons of Game of Thrones. His character ended up as the King of Westeros, a conclusion that many viewers found controversial.
After the show finished, Isaac went back to university to complete his degree at the University of Birmingham. He still makes appearances at fan events where he talks about his time on the series.
He first became interested in neuroscience in 2016, and credits his physics teacher with sparking that interest by sharing fascinating ideas.
Earlier this week, Isaac posted wedding photos from his private ceremony in London with his partner, Martha Comerford, whom he affectionately calls ‘M’.
Isaac revealed his surprising hobby when he was still acting on Game of Thrones, explaining it started during a break from filming to concentrate on his studies.
He shared with People magazine that he explored many different passions before settling on physics, including a previous fascination with neuroscience and understanding the brain.
I was really fortunate to have a great physics teacher in school. He was incredibly knowledgeable, and I often chatted with him about how physics connected to neuroscience. Those conversations led him to share other fascinating ideas with me, and I became completely captivated by particle physics.
Isaac explained that his fascination with particle physics prompted a visit to the world’s largest particle accelerator in Sur, Switzerland, though he doesn’t plan to pursue it as a career.
When Game of Thrones ended in 2019, he admitted he was keen to focus on a different path to acting.
He recently told GQ that it feels strange – like he’s already experienced a full career and a whole lifetime, but he’s really only just beginning to live. He emphasized that he’s still very young, only 19 years old.
I’m feeling like I have some breathing room now, so I’m planning to take it easy and enjoy myself for a while. I’ll look for some acting work when I can, and then eventually go back to applying for university.
Isaac earned a bachelor’s degree in neuroscience from University College London, where he studied how the brain controls eye movements. This research culminated in a published paper about changes in eye movements related to a condition called Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP).
In addition to finishing his degree, he’s paused his acting career to pursue clinical training in London.
Isaac has recently settled down with his wife, Martha Comerford. She’s appeared in a few photos on his Instagram, including a collection of pictures he posted in May.
Martha started out as a journalist, but now she works with the Digital Communications team at the House of Commons.

After Game of Thrones concluded in 2019, Isaac Hempstead Wright shared that he was surprised when his character, Bran, became king at the end of the final season, which many viewers found controversial.
The British actor said he was happy to see a character with a disability become king, despite everything else.
Isaac joined the cast of Game of Thrones at age 12 and never imagined the youngest surviving Stark character would eventually become king of all the realms.
He admitted he never suspected Bran, saying, ‘I honestly didn’t have the slightest idea!’
Isaac also spoke of his pride at Bran representing the disabled community on screen.
He praised the show’s decision to have a character with a disability win, calling it a remarkable and special moment. He noted how unexpected it was, given all the fantastical elements and other characters in the story, and highlighted how meaningful it felt to see Bran succeed.
He was thrilled to see his character evolve from being known as ‘Bran the Broken’ to becoming ‘The Lord of the Six Kingdoms’.
He said that viewers likely assumed Bran would die after Jaime Lannister pushed him from the window in the first episode.
‘He goes from being this vulnerable character to the most powerful there is,’ he added.
Isaac said he actually enjoyed the divisive ending, but understood the writers couldn’t make everyone happy.
He explained that it’s important to remember Game of Thrones isn’t like a superhero film. Unlike those stories, it won’t have a completely tidy ending with everything resolved for every character – that’s just not the style of the show.
In a surprising turn of events, Jon Snow (Kit Harington) was banished after killing his beloved Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke). He was the true heir to the Iron Throne.
As punishment for killing the Mad Queen, Jon was sentenced to spend the rest of his life with the Night’s Watch, forbidden to marry or have children.
Though the group made it through, the Stark family members were scattered, leaving fans deeply saddened by their separation.
Bran became king of six kingdoms, with Sansa becoming Queen of the North. Arya, meanwhile, set off to discover what lay beyond their known lands.
Isaac defended the HBO team, explaining that the ending wasn’t meant to be predictable – that was the goal all along.
