How new Star Trek movie pulled off that surprise A-list cameo

Star Trek: Section 31 spoilers follow.

In the latest Star Trek film, “Section 31,” there was an unexpected guest starring role from a top-tier actor, which remained a secret until the movie’s release.

In the film, there’s a scene where Michelle Yeoh’s character from Discovery, who was once Emperor Philippa Georgiou, reunites on screen with her co-star Jamie Lee Curtis, whom she worked with in Everything Everywhere All at Once.

In the film, the character portrayed by the actor for Halloween appears as Philippa’s supervisor, Control, whose voice is predominantly heard throughout the movie. However, towards the very end, Control shows up on a hologram.

In a conversation with the Miami Herald, executive producer Alex Kurtzman, along with director Olatunde Osunsanmi, revealed the circumstances behind the guest appearance. As Kurtzman put it, “Michelle and Jamie, they have a close relationship, don’t they?

When I mentioned to Michelle that the head of Section 31 ought to be someone familiar, she suggested we consult Jamie instead.

…”I replied, ‘Indeed, we would be the most fortunate ones.’ She agreed promptly. She excelled at it, walked in triumphantly, and it turned out magnificently.

Yeoh explained that the decision to invite Curtis was more of a collective consensus among us. She put it this way, “We realized we required someone whose presence as the admiral would instantly prompt reactions like, ‘Oh, definitely! Let him in!’

Alex and Tunde, along with the rest of us, exclaimed, ‘Jamie Lee Curtis!’ Someone then asked if it was possible to contact her. I hesitated, wondering if I should, but one of her friends encouraged me, saying, ‘Seize the opportunity! She’s comfortable with it.’

Osunsanmi mentioned: “She started off as the first day of filming, making quite an impact. She arrived with a fierce presence.

“In two hours, she did it and was out. And it was amazing. I think it feels just right to have it.”

Star Trek: Section 31 is now available to watch on Paramount+.
