People enjoy scary movies, and the Scream series is a prime example of that. The release of Scream in 2022 successfully brought the franchise back after a long hiatus, and it’s been just as popular as the original movies from the 1990s. Each Scream movie since 2022 has earned more money on its opening weekend than the one before it, with the latest film, Scream 7, achieving the highest opening weekend gross in the series’ history.
Despite issues like the firing of Melissa Barrera and the exits of Jenna Ortega and director Christopher Landon, Scream 7 had a solid opening weekend. Given that it was the most costly Scream movie to make, did its initial box office numbers cover the expenses? Is the film a financial success, and how do its earnings stack up against those of earlier Scream installments?
‘Scream 7’ Is Already Profitable
The latest installment, Scream 7, had a very successful opening weekend, earning $64 million domestically. This breaks the previous record held by Scream VI, which debuted with $44 million in 2023. It’s not quite clear what caused the $20 million increase. Was it positive buzz from the previous films and strong word-of-mouth? Perhaps it was the return of Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott? Or could it be that Scream 7 was the first film in the series released in IMAX, leading to higher ticket sales? Whatever the reason, the impressive debut is a great sign for a horror franchise that’s been running for three decades.
Despite being the most expensive film in the Scream series, Scream 7 had a very successful opening weekend. With a budget of $45 million – including $7 million for Neve Campbell and $2 million for Courtney Cox – the film appears to have already earned back its production costs. Considering theaters typically keep half of the opening weekend revenue, Paramount Pictures likely made around $32 million domestically in just three days. When combined with its $94 million worldwide opening, Scream 7 is on track to be a profitable release in theaters. Every Scream movie, except for the fourth installment, has earned back its budget at the domestic box office.
‘Scream 7’ Second Weekend Challenge

Paramount Pictures
I was so excited for Scream 7 and it definitely started strong at the box office! But I’m a little worried about how it will hold up in its second weekend. Unlike the previous Scream movies, people seem really divided on this one – it’s getting some pretty negative buzz. With a score of just 34% on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s unfortunately the lowest-rated film in the whole series. And it’s not just critics; audiences haven’t been as enthusiastic either. It got a B- CinemaScore, which isn’t bad for a horror movie, but it’s definitely lower than the other Scream films. In fact, it’s tied with Scream 4 for the lowest audience rating the franchise has ever seen, falling below the scores of both Scream and Scream VI.
While Scream VI experienced a 61% drop in ticket sales during its second weekend – similar to the 59.3% drop seen by the 2022 Scream film – these numbers suggest Scream 7 could still perform reasonably well. The biggest concern is a potential drop as severe as the one experienced by the 2009 Friday the 13th remake, which had a huge opening weekend boosted by its release on an actual Friday the 13th, but then plummeted 80% in its second weekend. Hopefully, Scream 7 avoids that fate, as such a steep decline could prevent it from reaching the $108 million domestic box office total of Scream VI, which is currently the highest-grossing film in the series (not accounting for inflation).
While Scream 7 had a good opening weekend, it remains to be seen if positive buzz will keep audiences coming back. March brings two new releases – Pixar’s Hoppers and Warner Bros.’ The Bride! – which will replace Scream 7 in IMAX theaters. The Bride! is expected to offer a different type of movie experience, providing an alternative to the horror of Scream 7.
The latest Scream movie is doing very well in theaters, marking Paramount Pictures’ first number-one film in almost a year – since Novacaine came out in March 2025. We’ll have a better idea of its overall success after the second weekend, but it’s almost certain that a sequel, Scream 8, will be announced shortly.
