Most auction items would not rise in value with the addition of cigarette burns.
But when the holes are made by supermodel smoker Kate Moss, it’s a different story.
I’m always fascinated by pieces with a story, and this one is incredible. A stunning white Gucci suit, originally owned by the late, brilliant Alexander McQueen, is heading to auction. Experts estimate it will sell for around £3,000 – a true collectible for any fashion enthusiast!
According to Kerry Taylor, the auction house managing the sale of Alexander McQueen’s belongings, the item’s damage actually increases its appeal to collectors.
Lee McQueen, known for his innovative designs, first debuted the suit in 2003 at the New York Fashion Awards – often called the ‘Fashion Oscars’ – where he received the International Designer of the Year award. He sadly passed away in 2010 at the age of 40.
According to a representative from the auction house, McQueen wore the Tom Ford suit once more when he presented his Pantheon Ad Lucem collection in Paris in 2004.
The auction house representative explained that although the item shows some wear and tear, those imperfections actually add to its story, showing it’s been cherished and used over time.
The holes in the left sleeve were actually burn marks from a cigarette belonging to Kate Moss, who was photographed with McQueen backstage at the Pantheon Ad Lucem show.
As a lifestyle expert, I find details like the condition of clothing incredibly revealing. When we examined this suit, it wasn’t just about the fabric or the cut; it really gave us a glimpse into the owner’s life – you could almost picture him enjoying life, celebrating wins, and attending events. It’s amazing how much a garment can tell you about someone’s story!
As someone who’s followed the fashion world for years, I always admired the connection between Kate Moss and Lee McQueen. They both really came onto the scene together in London back in the early ’90s, supporting each other as they climbed the ranks. It was a special bond, watching two incredibly talented creatives rise at the same time.
I’ll never forget when Kate Moss appeared as this incredible, shimmering hologram at Alexander McQueen’s 2006 show, ‘Widows of Culloden.’ She was draped in all these beautiful, flowing layers of white organza – it was truly breathtaking and such a signature McQueen moment.
