How Kate Beckinsale was a pillar of strength to her mother Judy Loe before her passing despite her own health woes and being ‘paralysed’ with grief after stepfather Roy’s death
Kate Beckinsale served as a strong pillar of comfort and assistance for her mother, Judy Loe, prior to her passing at the age of 78.
On July 15th, the actress, who is now 51 years old, announced the devastating news that her beloved mother had sadly passed away following a long period of intense pain and anguish. This heartrending loss has left Kate utterly overwhelmed by grief.
Judy’s exact cause of death hasn’t been determined yet, but it’s known that her mother, Kate, had been fighting stage four cancer over the past two years.
Kate has stood by her mother during her fight against cancer, even traveling from the United Kingdom to Los Angeles to provide care. This comes amidst the actress’s personal struggles with her own health issues and the passing of her stepfather Roy.
In 2024, concerns arose among Kate’s followers when she was admitted to the hospital for six weeks due to excessive bleeding from vomiting, which was attributed to stress.
Despite this, she persisted in looking after her mother, who passed away about 18 months following the demise of Judy’s second spouse and Kate’s stepfather, Roy, who had passed away in January 2024.

In December 2023, he ended up in a hospital in Los Angeles following a severe stroke that occurred as he fought against two types of cancer, which had been identified in him during the summer beforehand.
Unfortunately, this wasn’t the first instance where Judy found herself a widow. Her first husband, Richard Beckinsale, unexpectedly passed away in 1979, leaving Judy and their young daughter, Kate, behind at the tender age of five.
1979 saw me reeling with shock as my beloved idol, a man synonymous with iconic roles in Rising Damp and Porridge, departed this world on March 19th at an unthinkable age of 31. Leaving behind his heartbroken wife Judy, and Kate and her sister Samantha, his absence has left an irreplaceable void.
On Thursday, Kate sadly announced her mother’s passing by sharing a collection of photos, explaining that she was doing so because she needed to officially register her mother’s death certificate, which would soon be made public.
On the night of July 15th, she passed away in my embrace, enduring an indescribable amount of pain. I haven’t selected the most beautiful pictures or videos, as I am still unable to sift through my camera roll.
I sincerely regret that if any of her friends discover this news via indirect means like word-of-mouth or media outlets, please understand that I’m unable to access her phone.
I’m unable to move, but Jude was an essential guide, a cherished lover, and a treasured friend in my life. This small yet immensely compassionate woman has left a profound impact on countless individuals who hold her dear.
In countless instances, she demonstrates courage, even showing excessive forgiveness at times. Her unwavering faith in humanity’s inherent goodness makes the world appear significantly less bright when she isn’t around, almost too hard to endure.

She expressed: “Mom, I adore you immensely. Ever since I discovered my father passed away at the age of five, this fear has haunted me. Yet, here I am. Oh, Mom… I apologize, I truly apologize. I’m deeply sorry.
When Kate was only five, her father Richard passed away due to a sudden heart attack during the night. This tragic event occurred because Richard had an unidentified blockage in his coronary arteries.
During that period, it was actually Judy who was the center of attention within our family, as she was undergoing recovery in the hospital following a procedure to clear her fallopian tubes for future childbearing.
When she emerged, she learned her operation had been a success, but that her husband had died.
On the day preceding his passing, Richard escorted Kate (who was then only five) to see her mom in the hospital. He reported no bodily ailments but mentioned feeling fatigued instead.
In the evening, Richard went to a gathering thrown for The Two Ronnies, then he headed back to his residence in Sunningdale, Berkshire.
Most recently, comedian Richard was reported to have spoken with friends over the phone before retiring for the night, mentioning discomfort in his arms and chest but downplaying it. Sadly, he failed to rise the next morning.
Kate, who was previously cared for by a family acquaintance acting as her nighttime caretaker at home, has shared that she continues to experience Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, stemming from the harrowing incident of finding her father nearly lifeless at a young age when she was alone in the dark.

The traumatic event I experienced was triggered again when I lost Roy much later on. A year following his death, I confessed that the image of him dying would continue to haunt me indefinitely.
Losing Roy reawakened a long-dormant trauma for me. A year after he passed away, I admitted that witnessing his death had left an indelible mark on my consciousness and would forever linger as a ghostly memory.
Three years following her father’s demise, Roy, a renowned director responsible for hit TV shows such as Inspector Morse, Cracker, and A Touch of Frost, entered the life of Kate.
Next to a radiant photo of Roy, Kate wrote: ‘Discovering my father’s lifeless body all by myself in the middle of the night at the age of five had a profound impact on my life. The image of my cherished stepfather passing away a year ago today will stay with me eternally.’
It’s incredibly unfortunate that I was there for both instances of loss and couldn’t stop them, despite my best efforts the second time around. Regrettably, it wasn’t sufficient.

In the heart-wrenching journey of saying goodbye to my cherished Roy, I unfortunately lost more than just him – family ties, valued friendships, moments of good health, and all my savings, due to the injustices of an unforgiving healthcare system that caters less for the uninsured in America. Yet, if given a choice, I would make that same journey again, without hesitation.
Despite my deep regret for what seems like a catastrophic failure, I’m trying to find solace today by reflecting on his extensive preparation in recent years. He immersed himself deeply in Jungian studies and practice, and I find comfort in the belief that perhaps some aspect of him found peace in the transition from this life to whatever lies beyond. The line between life energy and what comes next feels incredibly thin.
It seems as though I’m deceiving myself when I try to make myself feel better, but maybe it’s because I haven’t yet achieved the level of understanding needed to convince myself otherwise, given my feelings of sorrow, guilt, and failure.
