How Josephine Baker Inspired This Year’s Best Met Gala Looks!

At this year’s Met Gala in 2025, focusing on the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s latest costume display about Black Dandyism (highlighting men’s style), numerous celebrities walking the red carpet paid tribute to a trailblazing female Black fashion figure, Josephine Baker. Known for her dancing and activism in civil rights, she was the first Black woman to lead a significant Hollywood film.

Similar to the stylish Black dandies, Baker also had a flair for fashion and wasn’t shy about making bold statements. An image of Baker, dressed in a tuxedo and top hat, can be found at Yale University’s Beinecke Library.

In an interview with Vogue, creator of ‘Abbott Elementary’, Quinta Brunson revealed that Baker was her inspiration behind wearing a suit on the red carpet.

Apart from Brunson, other celebrities like A$AP Rocky, Dua Lipa, and Venus Williams showcased a unique twist on Baker’s iconic hairstyle at the Met Gala. This style features a short cut with a single curl gracefully resting on the forehead.

Brunson and some other stars like A$AP Rocky, Dua Lipa, and Venus Williams sported a similar, yet personalized version of Baker’s distinctive hairstyle at the Met Gala – a short haircut with a curled fringe on the forehead.

Williams commented on the red carpet, “Josephine Baker was often referred to as the ‘Black Venus’. I aimed to capture her grace and elegance in my portrayal.

At the Met Gala, pop sensation Megan Thee Stallion drew inspiration from dancer Baker, recreating the iconic tall, cone-shaped ponytail that Baker wore in Havana, Cuba.

Gigi Hadid’s personalized golden Miu Miu dress shared an uncanny similarity with a Balmain dress modeled by Baker for a Balmain fashion shoot back in 1951.

It’s noted by the National Museum of African American History and Culture that Baker, who had relationships with both men and women, effortlessly transitioned between menswear and womenswear in fashion, which is a significant reason for her becoming a style icon within queer culture. In fact, Baker’s lasting impact could be felt at the 2025 Met Gala.
