How is House of the Dragon’s Oscar Tully related to Catelyn Stark from Game of Thrones?

As a huge fan of both “Game of Thrones” and “House of the Dragon,” I was absolutely thrilled to see Oscar Tully make his entrance in the latest episode! The way he handled the negotiations with Daemon at Harrenhal was a clear reminder of the badass Tullys we all know and love from the original series.

The momentum is building now for Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) and the forces of the Riverlands, as depicted in the second season’s next-to-last episode of “House of the Dragon,” titled “The Red Sowing.” In this installment, Daemon welcomed a significant guest at Harrenhal: Oscar Tully (Archie Barnes), who assumed the position of Lord Paramount of the Riverlands following his elderly grandfather Grover Tully’s demise. Oscar visited to negotiate with Daemon on behalf of the vassals, as Daemon has faced increasing unpopularity in the region due to the war crimes committed by Ser Willem Blackwood (Jack Parry-Jones) under his command.

1. In a swift demonstration of his leadership skills, Oscar immediately proved why he was the ideal choice for leading the Riverlords. During his inaugural negotiation as Lord of Riverrun, he successfully allayed the concerns of many of his vassals regarding Daemon, reaffirmed his grandfather’s oath to Queen Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy), and issued a death sentence for Willem due to his heinous actions. In fact, Oscar compelled Daemon to execute Willem personally since it was Daemon who initially instigated the use of unscrupulous tactics against House Bracken by ordering the Blackwood knight.

Reminiscent of the intrigue surrounding oaths on “Game of Thrones,” Oscar’s words before a beheading evoked similar memories. While “House of the Dragon” primarily focuses on the Targaryens, Oscar subtly reminded us that the steadfast Tullys and Starks are still present in this period and remain as formidable and honor-bound as they were during “Thrones.”

How is Oscar Tully related to Catelyn?

Unlike other prominent houses in Westeros like the Targaryens, Starks, and Lannisters, the Tullys’ history is not extensively documented by author George R.R. Martin, as detailed as those other houses. In “The World of Ice and Fire,” some significant periods of the Tullys are mentioned, such as their roles during Aegon’s Conquest and the Dance of the Dragons involving Oscar and his kin. However, unlike these other houses, the Tullys have yet to receive a comprehensive family tree.

In the novels, there are more Tully family members participating in the Dance of the Dragons than depicted in “House of the Dragon.” Among them is the elderly grandfather, Grover, and his adult son Elmo. Elmo’s children, Kermit and Oscar, also play significant roles during this conflict. Initially an adult, Kermit later inherits Riverrun after Elmo’s death and, along with his devoted brother Oscar, strengthens House Tully by supporting Queen Rhaenyra in battle.

1. For the Dance performance, the show simplified the Tully family lineage to focus on Grover and his grandson, Oscar, who has become the new Lord of Riverrun. Instead of Elmo and Kermit being part of it, they are not included in this particular presentation.

As a dedicated fan of George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” series, I’ve spent countless hours immersed in the rich tapestry of characters and intricate political machinations that make up this epic fantasy world. So, when it comes to the relationships between Oscar, Catelyn, Lysa, Brynden Blackfish, and Hoster Tully, my curiosity is piqued.

[Kermit’s] successors ruled as best they could after him, but Riverrun was never again as prominent as during those years. Loyal to House Targaryen through all the Blackfyre Rebellions, House Tully finally soured on the dragon kings during the madness of King Aerys II Targaryen, and Lord Hoster Tully joined Robert Baratheon and his rebels and helped bind together the alliance that brought Robert to the Iron Throne by granting the hands of his daughters to Lord Jon Arryn of the Eyrie and Lord Eddard Stark of Winterfell.

1. Apart from Lord Medgar Tully in “A Song of Ice and Fire,” there are other Tullys mentioned in the lore. In fact, during the first “Dunk & Egg” novella, which is set about 90 years following the Dance of the Dragons, Lord Medgar was in charge of Riverrun. He participated in a tournament at Ashford Meadow, so there’s a possibility he might appear in HBO’s upcoming “Game of Thrones” spinoff, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.” However, by the time the second “Dunk & Egg” novella rolled around a few years later, Lord Medgar had passed away, and Riverrun was being governed by his young son.

There’s another Tully named Celia mentioned in the family tree, who was once engaged to Jaehaerys II, the father of the Mad King. Celia’s father, who isn’t identified in “The World of Ice and Fire,” is believed to be either Catelyn’s grandfather, Lord Hoster, or the Tully ruler preceding him who took over from Medgar.

With no knowledge of the specific connection between Medgar’s successor and Hoster, it is impossible to determine if Hoster was his father, brother, or any other type of Tully relation. In other words, our understanding is based on speculation alone. Given that House of the Dragon occurs around 180 years prior to Game of Thrones, there could be several undocumented generations of Tullys existing between Oscar and Medgar.

In the chaotic Riverlands region of Westeros, where constant wars reign, keeping accurate records of deaths is not a priority as it is in the Red Keep or at Winterfell.

As a game enthusiast, I’m eagerly anticipating George R.R. Martin’s reveal about Oscar’s connection to the Tullys from ‘Thrones’, which might happen when he finally publishes ‘The Winds of Winter’, the long-awaited sixth installment in his epic series. In the interim, the season 2 finale of ‘House of the Dragon’ is airing this Sunday on HBO and Max. Can’t wait to see what unfolds!
