Although the death of Tracy McConnell, “The Mother,” in the final episode of How I Met Your Mother is often seen as a letdown, the show actually had a worse moment much earlier in the series. Even now, the series finale remains incredibly unpopular with viewers.

Watching Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) search for love over nine seasons of How I Met Your Mother – through countless dates, relationships, and finally meeting Tracy – was emotionally challenging, especially knowing she ultimately passed away. However, many fans felt disappointed with the show’s direction well before the finale.

Marshall And Lily’s Relationship Was The Best How I Met Your Mother Love Story

The first episode of How I Met Your Mother starts off well, setting up the story of Ted Mosby and his initial connection with Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders), but it quickly becomes clear that another couple is more captivating.

Marshall and Lily have the most compelling relationship in the series, built on shared happiness, genuine interest in each other, and strong support. Throughout the first season, it’s clear they’re inseparable and share everything with one another.

A key moment for Lily and Marshall’s relationship happened in season one, episode fourteen, titled “Zip, Zip, Zip.” They were hiding in the bathroom to give Ted and Victoria privacy, and during that time, Lily urinated in front of Marshall for the very first time – a sign of their growing intimacy and comfort with each other.

She was surprisingly delighted by this simple activity, because she thought after being together for so long, they’d already shared all their special firsts. This part of the story shows that even in a long-term relationship, there’s still joy and excitement to be found, and they still make each other feel butterflies after all this time.

While Ted often seems preoccupied with being in a relationship, Marshall genuinely loves Lily for who she is – her kindness, intelligence, creativity, and sense of humor. Lily, in turn, accepts and appreciates all of Marshall’s unique qualities.

Throughout their lives together, the couple supports each other through everything – from the stresses of planning a wedding to difficult times like the loss of Marshall’s father, and even as they decide to start a family. Their strong connection makes you root for them and hope they last.

How I Met Your Mother Made Us Care About Marshall And Lily, Then Split Them Up At Season 1’s End

Look, as a big fan of How I Met Your Mother, I have to say the show really frustrated me with Lily’s sudden move to San Francisco at the end of season one. We’d spent the whole season getting to know and love Marshall and Lily – both as a couple and as individuals – and then the writers put their relationship in jeopardy. It felt like a real letdown after all that investment, making me genuinely worry they’d split up permanently.

This storyline was a low point for the sitcom, and it didn’t feel genuine considering their relationship. Lily was rightfully seeking more independence at this time, but seeing Marshall so heartbroken over the engagement ring was a particularly difficult scene to watch.

Given how open Lily and Marshall are with each other, it felt strange that Lily wouldn’t have discussed wanting to focus on her art. It would have made more sense – and been more satisfying to watch – if she’d gone to the art fellowship with Marshall’s encouragement. It’s surprising the show didn’t go that route.

Fortunately, Lily reappears in season 2 of How I Met Your Mother, and she and Marshall are back together and planning their wedding. The show does a good job of realistically portraying how Marshall needs time to recover emotionally after everything that happened. However, this part of the story didn’t really add anything significant to the overall plot.

The story had the potential to be inspiring, showing a couple supporting each other’s ambitions. However, it ended up feeling pointless and surprisingly heartbreaking, simply because the writers didn’t give it a clear purpose.

Why Ted And The Mother’s Love Story Ultimately Falls Flat

While many fans dislike the How I Met Your Mother finale, it’s not the most disappointing part of the show. Ted and The Mother, as a couple, weren’t the strongest – we don’t see enough of their relationship developed early on to really feel connected to them, making their story less impactful.

The unexpected death of The Mother unfortunately overshadows the rest of their story. When people think back to the original series, they often remember her death more than the happy times the couple shared.

It felt disappointing that the show spent so much time building up the story of ‘The Mother’ only to have her pass away. Because we didn’t see much of Ted and Tracy’s relationship on screen, it was hard to feel a strong connection to them – especially compared to how easily we connected with characters like Marshall and Lily.

How I Met Your Mother Had Several Disappointing Relationships, Including Robin And Barney

Even though the first season finale had a small issue, Marshall and Lily consistently have a strong and loving relationship throughout How I Met Your Mother. Not all of Ted’s relationships are as successful, though. His early romance with Victoria feels awkward, and he’s hurt when his ex-girlfriend Karen (Laura Prepon) cheats on him.

Robin and Barney Stinson’s relationship—and eventual marriage in season 9—always felt unlikely to many viewers. They just didn’t seem like a good fit; Robin is a powerful, independent woman, while Barney is often portrayed as someone with outdated views and a fear of commitment.

It’s hard to imagine he’s genuinely matured and now desires a sincere, lasting relationship. It’s also difficult to see how Robin could accept his past insensitive comments and actions.

Even though watching Lily and Marshall as a couple isn’t always exciting, their short breakup remains the most disappointing moment for many fans of How I Met Your Mother, and it’s a tough part of the show to revisit.
