How Gladiator II Connects to the Original Gladiator

As a film enthusiast with a deep appreciation for historical epics and character-driven narratives, I must say that the release of “Gladiator II” has been a long-awaited treat. Having watched Ridley Scott’s original masterpiece multiple times and even participated in a live reading of the script at a film festival, I can confidently say that this sequel is a worthy successor to the throne.

In Ridley Scott’s original “Gladiator” film, you won’t find Denzel Washington delivering a standout performance as a cunning, robe-twirling arms dealer, but this Best Picture winner does have several key plot points that are crucial to the much-anticipated sequel.

25 years following the story of Roman General Maximus Decimus Meridius, portrayed by Russell Crowe, in his quest for vengeance against Commodus, the corrupt emperor who killed his family and enslaved him, a new movie titled “Gladiator II” has been released in theaters. This film chronicles the journey of a fresh warrior seeking revenge against Rome’s powerful forces.

In this new portrayal, Paul Mescal assumes the role of Lucius Verus, who was previously played as a child by Spencer Treat Clark in the 2000 original. This time, we find Lucius grown up, living under an assumed name, Hanno, in the North African kingdom of Numidia. However, when a Roman invasion fleet led by Pedro Pascal’s General Marcus Acacius comes to claim Numidia, Lucius’ life is dramatically altered as his wife is killed during the conflict and he is captured, forced onto a ship bound for Rome. There, he is sold into slavery in an empire now ruled by the unstable brothers Caracalla (Fred Hechinger) and Geta (Joseph Quinn).

15 years following Maximus’ tragic demise at the end of Gladiator, the story unfolds, disclosing that Lucius – who was assumed by some Romans to be the son of Lucilla’s deceased husband or even her own brother Commodus – is in fact Maximus’ offspring. Despite their contrasting upbringings, when Lucius finds himself compelled to battle for survival in the Colosseum, his genuine lineage becomes evident!

David Scarpa, the screenwriter, revealed in the film’s production notes that Maximus initially served as a military leader within the Roman empire, engaged in conflict against a horde of barbarians. Conversely, Lucius is a barbarian safeguarding his homeland from the advancing Romans. Maximus was faithful to Emperor Marcus Aurelius, while Lucius harbors intense animosity towards Rome and all it represents. In a twist of fate, both characters find themselves compelled to either fight or perish, all for the entertainment of the crowd.

In the aftermath of Maximus’ demise, a power struggle ensued, causing Lucilla to secretly take Lucius away from Rome for safety reasons, worried that his true identity might be discovered and he could be targeted. Yet, Lucius harbored feelings of abandonment at first and showed no interest in accepting his heritage or seizing the throne of Rome.

Initially, when Lucius, trained by Macrinus (Washington), enters the arena as its champion, he’s driven solely by a desire for revenge against Acacius, who caused the death of his wife and enslaved his adopted kin. Unexpectedly, Acacius is wed to Lucilla, and it turns out that he’s not entirely evil. Regrettably, by the time Lucius realizes Acacius’s redeeming qualities, it’s already too late to shield him from the fury of Caracalla and Geta.

Acacius’ demise sparks Lucius into rebellion against Macrinus, who secretly manipulates the ruthless twins. His goal is to realize his father’s (and grandfather Marcus Aurelius’) vision of an improved Rome. Although Gladiator II concludes with a mostly victorious finale, Scott has hinted at contemplating another chapter in the series.

He shared with France’s “Premiere” magazine that he has set things in motion, much like lighting a fuse. The conclusion of “Gladiator II” bears resemblance to “The Godfather”, as Michael Corleone finds himself in a position he didn’t seek, pondering, ‘Now, Father, what do I do?’ Therefore, the next film will explore a character who doesn’t want his current predicament.
