How Giorgio Armani revealed his ‘biggest regret’ in last interview published just one week before his death aged 91 – and explained who he wanted to take over from him

In his final interview before passing away at the age of 91, Giorgio Armani expressed a single sentiment he regretted regarding his illustrious career in fashion.

In a peaceful setting, the renowned figure of Italian fashion bid farewell from his residence in Milan, amidst the love and companionship of his family, on Thursday.

Until his passing, Giorgio Armani served both as CEO and creative director, confessing in his last interview with the Financial Times that his “main flaw” lies in his tendency to maintain control over everything.

The hardworking individual, deeply engaged in all aspects of his productions, confessed that his one major regret in life was giving more importance to his work rather than his relationships with loved ones.

He expressed that his greatest sorrow in life stemmed from devoting excessive amounts of time to work, which left him with insufficient moments to spend with loved ones like friends and family.

Armani disclosed his preferred successor for his worldwide brand following his demise, specifically mentioning one individual.

He mentioned his strategy for passing on his responsibilities involves a smooth handover to those he trusts most, such as Leo Dell’Orco, key family members, and our entire staff, who work closely with him.” (Leo Dell’Orco heads the men’s design division at the Armani group.)

‘I would like the succession to be organic and not a moment of rupture,’ Armani added.

In a statement released today, the fashion house announced his death ‘with infinite sorrow’.

Armani passed away only a few weeks before the scheduled 50th anniversary event, which was set to occur during Milan Fashion Week.

The company’s representative expressed, with genuine feelings, that they deeply miss the individual who established and grew this organization with foresight, enthusiasm, and commitment.

Known for his effortless tailoring, the renowned designer Armani has been a go-to choice for celebrities such as Julia Roberts, George Clooney, Cate Blanchett, and Lady Gaga.

He was one of the most influential and globally famous designers of the late 20th century.

His demise sparked sorrow throughout the fashion community, as Donatella Versace commented that “today we lost one of the giants in our world”.

As I share on Instagram, this renowned figure in Italian fashion has carved an indelible mark that transcends time. His legacy shall endure eternally.

‘What a life he had, from his beginnings to his glory.’

He concluded his message with “You’ll forever be in my heart, Giorgio.

In a nod back to her iconic 1990 Golden Globes appearance where she turned heads in Armani menswear, Julia Roberts recently posted a photo of herself alongside the designer on Instagram.

She wrote: ‘A true friend. A Legend.’ She added the heartbreak emoji.
