How Fantastic Four’s International Box Office Opening Weekend Beat Superman’s

To my astonishment, the global box office earnings for the debut weekend of “Fantastic Four 2025” surpassed those of Superman’s, even with their worldwide theater rivalry. In the opening three-day weekend, the Marvel reboot titled “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” garnered an impressive $218 million, slightly falling short of the DC reboot’s $220 million earned by Superman. However, it’s worth noting that The Fantastic Four underperformed domestically but made up for it with outstanding performance in other regions. • United Kingdom & Ireland – $10.8 million

According to a report from ScreenDaily, the international box office earnings for the film featuring Pedro Pascal have been impressive, particularly in Europe and Latin America, raking in approximately $100 million. This accounts for around 46% of the Marvel reboot’s total sales so far. In contrast, Superman 2025 earned $95 million internationally, which equates to just 41% of its opening weekend earnings.

Compared to the opening weekend earnings of Superman 2025, Fantastic Four 2025 outperformed it significantly in Mexico, raking in an impressive $3.2 million more. It also led the way in Italy by earning an additional $2.5 million, France by $1.5 million, the United Kingdom by $1 million, and Spain by a modest $0.2 million. However, Superman still managed to secure higher earnings in Australia, Brazil, India, and China. This was despite director James Gunn acknowledging that his movie might be facing challenges due to anti-American sentiment worldwide.

In a similar vein, Fantastic Four 2025 performed well in Singapore and Malaysia, yet American superhero movies still face challenges in Asian territories. China, once a reliable market with significant box office earnings like the $175 million earned by Avengers: Endgame in its debut, has become less favorable. The Chinese government’s policies have made it tough, if not impossible, for Western films to secure screens, prioritizing domestic nationalist productions instead, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. This, along with stiff competition from other films, resulted in a modest $4.5 million opening for the Marvel film in China.

Simultaneously, it’s worth mentioning that the release of the film in Japan didn’t go smoothly because it had to contend with the anime movie Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which has amassed approximately $87 million since its premiere on July 18 within the country. However, despite this competition, it managed to earn the same $2.5 million in Japan as Superman did during their initial weekends, hinting that it might maintain its presence in Japanese cinemas.

During the premiere weekend of Fantastic Four, Superman surpassed the $500 million mark, which is considered its break-even point. As anticipated, the film experienced a significant decline in revenue, earning approximately $19.9 million (equivalent to a 57% decrease) in its third weekend. Now, with the Marvel reboot taking over on IMAX and premium screens, Superman’s earnings have slowed down. However, due to a relatively empty movie schedule for the upcoming month, both films are expected to reach their box office targets gradually.
