How did Team Great Britain fare during the Gold Rush weekend?

As a seasoned gamer who has lived through countless virtual Olympics and World Cups, I must say that watching Team Great Britain perform at Paris 2024 was a truly heartwarming experience. It felt like I was watching my favorite characters level up, each victory adding to their in-game stats and reputation.

During the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics, both athletes and spectators experienced high levels of anticipation. A multitude of thrilling competitions unfolded, leaving many on the edge of their seats. Notably, Team Great Britain added to its prestige by earning more medals, while several athletes qualified for the final rounds.

Day 8: In golden style

Saturday’s events included rowing, sailing, gymnastics, team dressage, and athletics.

How did Team Great Britain fare during the Gold Rush weekend?

The men’s eight crew in rowing, guided by coxswain Harry Brightmore, took one of the weekend’s fifty-four gold medal victories. The team consisted of Sholto, Carnegie, Rory Gibbs, Morgan Bolding, Jacob Dawson, Chanie Elwes, Tom Digby, James Rudkin, and Tom Ford and beat the silver medal team from the Netherlands by 1.08 seconds. Elwes described the race as “99.9%…perfect…We shot out the start like a rocket and then just never looked back.”

Simultaneously, the women’s eight team secured a third place finish in their competition. Henry Fieldman served as the coxswain for the rowing crew consisting of Heidi Long, Rowan McKellan, Holly Dunford, Emily Ford, Laura Irwin, Eve Stewart, Harriet Taylor, and Annie Campbell-Orde. In reference to their win, Campbell-Orde humbly commented:

I think I was really trying to focus on what Henry was saying at the time, because if I thought about the whole 2km, it was almost a bit overwhelming. He said to do the best of our ability, and I think that we did that at that moment on that day.”

As a windsurfing enthusiast myself, I also brought home a well-deserved bronze medal in the competition, trailing behind Marta Maggetti from Italy. Just like her, I aim to inspire young windsurfers out there and demonstrate that putting in the effort is key. If you work hard and see success, then, in my book, that’s already considered a win!

In a tight contest, Great Britain earned its first-ever men’s artistic gymnastics medal at the games by a slim margin. Jake Jarman came very close, finishing only 0.033 points behind Artem Dolgopyat of Israel, who claimed the silver. The gold went to Carlos Edriel Yulo from the Philippines. Max Whitlock placed fourth in the pommel horse event, but as he steps away from competition, he leaves behind a remarkable legacy for Team GB – making him their most decorated gymnast ever with three golds and three bronzes. His career ends with an impressive record to be proud of.

At the equestrian competitions, the trio of Carl Hester, Lottie Fry, and Becky Moody won a bronze medal in the team dressage event. This marks the fourth consecutive Olympics where Team Great Britain has earned a medal in team dressage. Throughout these victories, Carl Hester has played a crucial role.

As a gamer, I’m pumped to share that our team finally clinched a bronze in the 4×400 relay at these athletics! The race was against some tough competitors, but we held our ground behind the gold medalists from the Netherlands and silver from Team USA. Our time of 3:08.01 is something I’m incredibly proud of – it’s a record-breaking moment for us!

Day 9: A mother shines

Today, it was truly remarkable to witness four medal-winning feats from Team Great Britain, with one of those medals going to the exceptional Amber Rutter. Despite welcoming her first child just three months prior, she demonstrated sheer determination and grit by claiming silver in the women’s skeet final. Unfortunately, she wasn’t able to compete in Tokyo due to Covid-19, but her spirit remains undeterred as she shares her profound sentiment: “Being an Olympic medalist and a mother simultaneously is incredibly inspiring. I hope we can convey this message to other mothers everywhere that our journey doesn’t end with the arrival of a new baby.”

At the golf tournament, Tommy Fleetwood earned the second place position, just behind Hideki Matsuyama from Japan. Fleetwood expressed that standing on the podium was one of the most incredible experiences he’s had as a golfer, something he will never forget throughout his lifetime.

At the individual dressage event during the Paris 2024 games, Charlotte earned her second bronze medal. She acknowledged the exceptional performance of her horse, Glamourdale, but also expressed admiration for her rivals’ impressive displays.

The prizegiving was just insane. That feeling going around with Jessica [Von Bredow-Werndl] and Isabel [Werth too, idols and huge inspirations in our sport, it was just incredible.

In the end, Harry Hepworth secured the third position on the vault, scoring 14.949 points. This made him the initial British male athlete to win a medal on this apparatus. Additionally, he became the first British man to advance to the final round for rings competition. He ultimately placed seventh in that event.

On the weekend, I was thoroughly exhilarated! I can’t wait to swell with even greater pride as Team Great Britain keeps shining brightly.
